I chopped off the tip of my finger about 6 months ago with a cleaver (dont ask!!) - about the size of a contact lens....

Skin grew back and there are fingerprints on the new bit, but they dont quite line up with the rest of the finger....

So I would have thought that they will grow back...

There was a case many years ago, of a criminal who acid burnt his fingerprints off in order to commit crimes. But they grew back. And I believe that with the population in the world now, fingerprints cannot be solely used as evidence, as it is possible for more than one person to have the same set of prints, hence DNA is now the prefered method.
