I wouldn't trust that as far as I could throw it.

Completely FUBAR'd. I believe him when he says how it happens. but that doesn't excuse the fact that the rest of the bike is likely to be compromised it he's fiddled with it.

Thoughts such as you have(not without merit) is why he should have had it changed.

That said I'm sure there are thousands of Gorilla home mechanics who are possibly worse than him but just lucky not to leave very obvious signs

It's weldable anyway.....I'm sure my welder could have done a very good job on it....

Done by over tightening. Its common on Milie's and is often done by tyre fitting shops.

Now I know zip about this sort of thing. It looks f*cked to me - but is it really weldable, would it be as strong? I don't have a SV and I'm not in the market so I'm simply interested in whether it could be fixed, not in buying it.

wouldn't the washers underneath the bolts show visible signs of deformation if they had been tightned to to such an extent that they'd crack the fork ? wouldn't you expect them to deform upwards towards the nut if that was really the case?

Depends almost totally on the shape of the surface the force bears on and where that will yield, since its quite solid, obviously didn't yield and fractured at the top where it's subject to bending moment and probably quite a bit of tensile load. Cast alloy can be quite brittle.

...or even just a single new fork lower from Suzuki- they're pretty cheap IIRC.
I'd definately not ride the bike like that, which of course would mean either buying and taking the parts/tools to fix it there, or collecting it in a bike trailer and the associated hassle of either (not to mention you might be doing all that only to turn up and find it's no longer for sale/spot something that he hasn't described accurately elsewhere, etc.) This is likely to put off a lot of buyers, or at the very least, severely impact the price. The seller would probably even still come off better in terms of cash if he rode the bike to a dealer and got them to replace with a brand new OE item.

With regard to how it happened, as Ratty says, a lot of tyre shops do them up "tight as fook". I remember having to take mine back to a tyre shop to get my rear axle loosened as they had done it up so tight my suzuki tool kit spanners broke trying to undo it. Okay, so they're chocolate tools, but I was putting waaaaaay more than 100Nm force onto them. It's sort of understandable why: If they ask how tight it goes and you don't know, you'll worry they don't know either. So if they don't know, they don't ask and just edge on the side of caution and do it too tight. I agree with Berlin though, that given the non-standard washers and the guy claiming to of done this himself, he is probably a cack-handed home mechanic and I'd constantly be worrying about what other things he has warped/damaged through doing them up too tight.
