What will you be doing at the gig?!

Anna, what would you be doing at the FF gig ?

If it's a chance to put into practice what your course is teaching (ie lighting / sound etc), I'd do it because it may well lead to future work or at least a put your name & face into the brains of the guys leading these teams - you already know about the 'bring a buddy' system that exists in 'the business'.

However, if it's a job as 'local hump' then forget it - as you are well aware there is little to no chance of this leading to anything else - other than more of the same.

I did loads unpaid work in TV/film I always said if I'm doing something for free and I got offered pay work I would being doing that instead, unless the unpaid gig was something awesome.

Go to the FO gig, if anything it sounds like a good time and you never know who you might meet! Networking is worth while.

There are lots of wannabes out there, who say it will lead to this and that and paid work, or defered payment, in my experince they are talking out their ass.

I guess it depends on who the unapaid work is with etc, but I'm sure if you explained that you needed to do the other thing instead most people understand, that you need to make money.

No one should be doing long placements with the minium wage paid, its dam illegal if they are expecting people to do that, there was a huge campinge through BECTU ect about this. Bottom line to anyone out there is don't be working for free, for long periods of time.

This was my experince of the media tv/film I spent quite long time doing this, but then changed my job!

As a rule now I don't do unpaid gigs anymore after having being ripped off and still owed money from some not very nice people.

The only decision you have to make is between being upfront with work experience or pulling a sickie. You got to do the Foo!
