Checking the clearences is fairly easy.If you can chage the plugs you can do this.Only if you find they need adjusting and reshimming does it get hard, and they very rarely do need it.

The chances of it needing them adjusted if you check it are pretty tiny. But the chances of needing it if you don't are probably much more likely

Yup, and that's why you were doing it so much Shim under bucket is a pain to adjust but very very stable so it doesn't need many adjustments.

Every big service I think it is. It's in the manual though I don't follow the manual for everything (for simplicity) so I'm not 100%, I just do it every 12000.

How difficult is it to do on the pointy as i might be looking at having a go at servicing myself?

I can do most things myself but how much is a valve check in a garage roughly instead?

Checking the valves is easy. Just remove the rocker cover and get youself a set of feeler gauges with a good range over the min and max tolerances. Al you need to do then is rotate the crank by hand to specific points and measure the gap.

Couple of things though, re-shimming if they are out of tolerance or close to is a much more involved job - one that unless you know what you are doinf, I'd take to a garage. Secondly, if a valve is close to a min/max tolerance, people tend to think that it's ok. However, I would still air on the side of re-shimming so that it is back between min/max - don't skimp on it!
