Get yourself a mercedes vito if money allows - built to last, v reliable, not too large but big enough for 1 0r 2 bikes and kit. And sleep in! Goes like a train home and drives like an estate.

managed to find myself an old 99 Ford Transit that had been converted by a local council into an invalid bus - especially useful as it came complete with wheelchair hydraulic tail lift!
Sling a microwave and telly in the back and you're away!
Only cost me a grand off ebay and has been pretty faultless so far.

Over here the VW T4 is popular. As long as an estate car. No higher that a 4X4 and has space for 2 track bikes and can sleep 2 in if you need to. You are not restricted in car parks through height. It has engines to suit all needs. Very reliable. The 1.9 can run on cheaper oils than diesel if converted. Rear hatchback is great to hang leathers from and sit on the back watching the other groups or on the odd(?) rainy day for shelter. Had mine 5 years now. Beats having a trailer with slower towing speeds on motorways and main roads. Also keeps bike under cover and safe.
