A steelie 600 would be a sight cheaper and more reliable.
A friend knows somebody who had 2 write off RS125's, cosmetic damage, bit of an insurance jobby, but I was thinking Mini Twin as curvy's look cheapily picked up and there is plenty of parts on fleabay.

True..

Well the Ron Haslam Race Day I'll be doing is on a cbr600rr so that'll probably push me towards Mini Twin.

This sounds all too easy. What else is there to it apart from having a bike, spares and a lot of spare cash. Do you not need to prove your skill first or have friends in the right places. (i.e. event organisers and the like)

Or is it really just folk with money and time can just join in???

I wish a lot of spare cash was it! I've always wanted to do it, it won't be this year but I'd want to start getting into it just race days and getting experience.

I want to do it for the fun factor, at the end of the day I'm not an experiernced rider road or track, but theres a place to learn and I know if I don't have the skill of a strong rider then it'll be track days for fun. But worth a shot.

First step would be to lose the keg I carry from serious drinking sessions.

You need an ACU license I believe.

I don't have any experience racing but I did look at club racing before I left the UK. I think you'll find that any class will be expensive! There have been numerous threads on the costs involved in a race meet - tyres, fuel (getting there and bike + for the bike), entry fees and practice days alone will set you back around 300-400 pounds and that doesn't factor in the cost of the bike, van or binning it!

I think it's a common misconception that a lower capacity motorcycle equals cheaper racing. I'd personally be looking towards classes with very tight regulations on what can be done to the bike to keep costs down. Something like CB500s or steelie CBR's.

I've held an ACU licence for a fair few years and raced in several different classes and you just will not believe how quickly things get expensive. When I did open 250 we were running a 6 year old bike, but it still needed rings every 150 miles (two meetings), pistons every 300 and crank every 1,000. Add to that a rear tyre every meeting and a front every other (and we were being stingy) plus fuel, entry fees and extras (things like food) and if you managed a meeting for less than £500 you were doing well. Bearing in mind that is probably two 15 minute practice sessions and two maybe three 10/12 lap races and that's a lot of money per mile/lap. Note I haven't mentioned crash damage yet and you could bank on two or three offs in a season minimum so that's at least another £1,000. Before you think it is all doom and gloom I will point out that the adrenaline rush you get from the first corner dash is second to none, however there are cheaper drugs available.....

My advice is go and do a few track days first. For circa £120 you will get 2 hours plus of track time, no pressure and plenty of opportunity to scare yourself. Once you can hold your head up in the Advanced group consider going racing.

That sounds like pretty good advice. You sound like a man in the know Red Herring.

I wouldn't mind going to some mini twin meets and getting an idea of how fast the riders are.

...Not that i'm thinking of going racing in the near future.
