How are you trying to connect to them? Simply viewing them in Network Neighbourhood? Or via \\computername\share ?
Just going out for my run (training for marathon would you believe) I'll be back in about an hour and half. Will do all above when I get back.
Cheers guys!

ermmm. sorry to be so obvious ... but you have you set the folders you want to browse on either computer to 'share'? 'right click on the folder you want to share then select sharing and security'

All done....I think...it was the obvious 'file sharing then mapping', as I said...it's all new to me, but at least I learned something new!! the only thing left is how secure are the drives? At no point was I prompted to enter passwords to protect the folders/drives. I take it the fact that my network is protected with a network key would suffice.

Anyway, thanks for all the help guys.

Disable broadcast SSID (just make sure you've set a memorable SSID or you'll irritate yourself with it!). Should stop anyone parking up with a laptop or your neighbours knowing you have wireless. There's other steps you can take if the stuff's really sensitive but wifi isn't very secure in general.

No, it won't. It really won't.

But yes, disable SSID broadcast anyway - I forgot that in my PM, apologies.

Why does it show up on the 'view wireless networks' list anyway?
I thought you'd need net stumbler or alike to detect it.

It doesn't list by default, but you can 'tweak' Windows to make it list networks without SSID's.

My point was more that it wouldn't hide the network, purely because of applications like Netstumbler. Though of course a neighbour could find it if they setup a network on the same channel.
