I'm all for female racers - if they can do the lap times then they're worthy.

As for the grid girls, standards seem to vary wildly by event. I've seen some photos of the 'ladies' at Thruxton and half of them looked pretty average, the other half downright awful.

There is no reason that women should not be represented in all sports at all levels. We have a world cup winning womens cricket team which got almost zero media/tv coverage, and yet the mens team loses over and over again to maximum publicity.

And what about disabled sport. Olympic coverage of 12 year old girls doing gymnastics gets on the BBC, but adult disabled athletes get shunted to midnight on BBC4 if they are lucky.

I don't have any answers as to how women can get better representation in sports, but i'd go as far as to say that being a brolly dolly isn't going to help them break through the glass ceiling.

I think that the glamour models / grid girls etc must feel quite pressurised sometimes, to remain looking the way they do. It can't be good for you when you see other girls looking similar, or maybe better (as you may perceive it). Likewise, it must make you constantly aware of your body shape and image. I wonder what body image many of the girls have? It would have been interesting if Maria, during her dissertation, got the grid-girls to complete her questionairre regarding that topic

I personally am not bothered about the presence of the grid girls / promo girls at bike meets and race meets. I don't take much notice of them, but when I do i tend to see how other people are taking notice of them. Many people also dont seem to care, but there are a few that leer and stuff. I guess for the marketing firms trying to get rid of red bull etc, if the girls help shift a few items then its worth it

As for girls in racing - what happened to katja poensgen? she won the world supermoto series, and was in 250cc gp's for a bit, but i guess a crap bike ment she faded from the limelight

And for culture and ethnicity....well, there is Sofuoglu, who is a Muslim Turk. Apprently, in his country, he became a sort of hero overnight once he won the world supersport championship, but he also has said that if you are not sucessfull, people dont want to know. Maybe this is true of some other eastern cultures and perhaps why those cultures dont find themselves more involved in the sport?

I've noticed quite alot at bike meets (boxhill, ace cafe, bury hill) that the vast vast majority of people who turn up are white, middle aged, english males. At the ace cafe you tend to get more of other ethnicities, but only then black english people, not any other ethnicities.

Odd that.

Regarding grid girls - a lot of budding models actually do it for free in the hopes of the exposure it could offer.

Typical example of how to get into it - http://www.purestorm.com/forum/readT...aspx?id=115250

Seriously I don't really get the point of grid girls... I'm an 18 y/o heterosexual guy and I'm like just a bit "meh" about it..

maybe because I don't like all the whorish outfits and skanky, slutty scattered ass I see EVERYWHERE I go.. I enjoy a beautiful girl as much as the next guy but beauty can't be measured with make up and a skin tight Lycra suit covered in adverts for a tobbaco label.

I mean, a girl that just covers herself in 28 layers of makeup, in my eyes, looks worse than the naturally beautiful girl next door.

Anyway if I wanted to look at boobies I couldn't touch I'd be at home with a box of kleenex! I go/watch for the racing, at shows I go for the bikes, not for the women.. maybe that's cause I'm very sensible about it all... anyway....

rant over!

You know what annoys me a little bit...its when in MCN they have the annual MCN girls comp (how did grinch not get in?!) and they ask the girsl what bikes they like. Most say "sports bike". well narrow it down a bit luv! Do you like....SV650's? RSV's? NSR's? GSXR's? The red ones? The green ones?
