****, the problem's still not fixed.

The idle speed isn't steady even when the bike's completely warmed up and just bounces up and down over a range of a few hundred revs. All the connectors are in place as best as I can tell so the carbs probably need to be balanced/sync'd, which is beyond me.

Booked it into Essential Rubber to get it done because I've heard good things about them.

essential rubber are very good, i feel comfortable taking my bike to them. I can only think its some kind of air-leak, or perhaps the sliders in the carbs are sticking?

I had the good ol' rip-off washers (£240 for parts and labour!!!!) and suffered no problems when they came out..

The bike's absolutely fine over 80mph so I'm going to time my journey to London today to coincide with the lowest amount of traffic. Finally, a semi-reasonable excuse to speed like a little ****.

And now you're off the 33bhp you can get your full quota of points too

What happens when you blip the throttle at standstill? Does the speed stick a little high, then drop down again?

Sticky sliders would not cause this problem. Broken diaphragm would not cause this either I don't think.

**** me, this thing accelerates like **** off a fan when you roll on the throttle at 90mph.

Blipping the throttle at a standstill causes the revs to increase smoothly and then drop immediately and go back to bouncing around the idle speed. I lifted the tank up and took the airbox out to check connections and they were all fine, so I suspect the carbs aren't balanced, which is the only thing the manual suggests for a jerky idle speed provided there's no air leak.

All fixed! Essential Rubber balanced the carbs and said the choke hadn't been reconnected properly, which they fixed. It's running perfectly now.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

I would have done that but the girlfriend's being demanding, pointing out that her exams are about to start while mine have finished and therefore I should be doing her shopping and cooking for her.
