you dont need an X-ring chain per se, I have an O ring. bit cheaper. Tsubaki or DID chain and matching sprockets (steel ones) are good to go for in the mean time, clean and lube...you might need to attack it with a tooth brush

foot resting.. it may be due to not letting your foot fully move away from the leaver..

i was doing this (mainly on down shifts) and all i was getting was false neutrals (felt as though the lever was just flopping about under my foot) until someone mentioned it. i never realised that my foot was 'resting' on the lever, now i make sure i lift my foot off the leaver after every change and all is well.

Nah i ruled out foot resting as i keep my toes away from the levers as well am hoping its just chain and clutch adjustment

Well i adjusted the chain and lubed it oh what fun that was in the dark lol got even more of a shock when i looked under the pillion seat and found the tool kit although rusty still there and didn't need to scavage for tools!

Anyways like i said adjusted and lubed the chain lubed the geat lever linkages although to be fair they felt free enough i never had time to take the drive cover off to check the clutch operation but on checking my manual i am getting the 15 mm play in the lever it talks about and i seem to be getting full movement ie no resistance when in gear but clutch pulled in can wheel the bike about freely. Sprockets look ok and chain was not as bad as i thought more surface corrossion on the link plates cleaned it uo and all seems ok.

Rode it home from work this morning defo feels better shifting now am also trying (successfully in most cases) to blip the throttle as i drop a gear. I only manged to have the probelm once today at traffic lights but after a couple of taps downward i did get neutral and 1st back so not perfect but a million times better.

now beginning to wonder is it the bike or the inept rider?

Alan, glad to hear you have made your gear changes better with some simple cleaning

The free play at the lever is not just due to correct worm-drive (oushrod) adjustment, its mostly due to correct cable tension. The extent to which the clutch plates are separated is determined only by how (correctly) adjusted the worm drive is.

In any case, you seem to be much happier so go with what you have, keep the chain cleaned and lubricated (a nice squirt of chain lube every 150 miles or so, and clean it with parraffin once every 500 miles or once a week or something, depending on how you use the bike)

Blipping with the downshift also does help, I notice this too

wow

i thought i was the only one.
riding in traffic coming up to a roundabout i i slowed down and tried to change down (it wouldnt it got stck in 3rd) bike made a bad noise like gears crashing into one another, i managed to pull up on the side and with bike turned off it wouldnt change out of gear down or up.
after a while i rocked the bike forward and back changeing gears didnt sound right i managed to get it into nutral bike seems to be ok now for how long i dont know, if i remember correctly i think after i tightened the chain, so i would say loose chain oh and before i forget the rubber on my clutch lever seemed to work the nut loose causeing it to be slack.
you might want to check the linkage bar as well mine seemed to be slightly curved and the gear peg would catch on it stoping me from changeing up.
