Sadly true YC.
I built the bike for them and it was running sweet, despite only being a £100 bike. The customer then asked me to turn the handle bar sideways for them so they could fit it in their small car. I did so and explained that the bar must be turned back and tightened before riding. ![]() They got home and turned the fork the wrong way, putting the disk on the wrong side. On cheap and nasty bikes, the disk carrier is simply screwed on to the hub and if turned the wrong way, it will unscrew. ![]() The disk unscrewed and stripped its threads, cut a chunk out of the bottom of the fork and broke off. The customer returned after an hour claiming I had done a bad job building their bike. The look on their face when I told them it was not a warranty issue, but due to stupidity will haunt me. They deflated once I had proved my point, but if they will come in shouting abuse, they deserve it. ![]() I had a bad day, but at least I was not an idiot. I expressly told them how to turn the bars, but after all I am just a woman, so what do I know? ![]() I get this a lot. One customer asked one of my lads to check the bike for them because it had been built by me, a woman. The lad just smiled and told the customer I was a better mechanic than him. I have had customers ask to speak to one of the lads about their bike rather than ask the woman a technical question. I love the look on their face when the lads then come and ask me right in front of the customer. Sexism sucks. ![]() |

So-so. Spent a fair proportion of the weekend running around after my parents. Mum was admitted to hospital with heart pains on Saturday evening and discharged after a night of obs. Dad can't drive because a week ago he dislocated his one good shoulder when he tripped in the garden and landed square on his face (his other shoulder is useless due to an old bullet wound from army days), so it was up to me to run him and mum around. He looks like he's taken a serous beating with bruises all over his chops and arm in a sling.
All three of my sisters are out of town, and my lil brother has learning difficulties so it was all down to me to muck in and sort the oldies out. I was meant to be attending my son's GCSE results party but was with my mum at the hospital all night, so feel a bit bad about that. I may relax with a drinky tonight before an early night, I have to be up at 4-30 tomorrow morning Last edited by Lozzo; 31-08-09 at 06:29 PM. |

Friday, packed up car and drove to Bala.
Saturday, woke up in a lovely field next to the lake and watched our sailors fight the wind. Sunday, actually got to sail, in about a force 6, exhilarating! Monday, watched several capsizes before packing up and driving home. Fab weekend, with lots of socialising (which I don't usually do) and drinking! |
