After having both I would say get the SV if you want an engine with lots of poke up to 8500/9000rpm. Easy for riding around town.

Bandit's arn't that bad in the low rev's around 4000/6000 but you need to get them shifting around the top end of the rev's to have the most fun.

I was very tied between these bikes. The SV sounded brilliant all through the rev's and the engine was perfect.
Then again the Bandit sounded great when it was revving really hard and was fun as I managed to set the suspension etc just right.

I think you will find the SV does better on fuel economy too mate, being a twin and having a power delivery which favours keeping the revs down. I also find my SV with me on it will beat my mates bandit with him riding off the line and upto 100

I had an 03 Bandit 600S and i've now got an 53 SV650N SV is lighter, easier to ride, very similar riding positions. Can't really go wrong with either but i'd say go for the SV.

I started on a Bandit 600 and went to an SV650.
As my first post shows http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=72881 I didn't even know my SV was restricted and yet I preferred it to the Bandit and found the acceleration from rest (not all the way to 60) was better than the bandit.
I fancy an old Bandit12 myself one day. So if you dn't fancy a progression of bikes and feel retrained enough to just get what you want now, then consider the Bandit 12.
As to the 2 prices of what you've found I would just say the difference is the fact that one is Dealer & other Private - always better value Private.

unless you buy a shed. Don't forget the dealer has legal obligations, and usually offers a 3 month warranty - so anything not right they have to fix. A private sale has none of this security.

Like a few others i started on a 1999 Bandit 600, sold it, and got an SV 02.

I much prefer the SV. Its lighter, smaller, easier to fling around corners with much more confidence, and better acceleration. Overall, just more fun.

The only thing i can think of which was better with my Bandit was the riding position and how comfortable it was. Oh and it had a centre stand.

Thanks for all the contributions. Although it’s called SV650.org it’s nice to see plenty of unbiased opinions on different machines. I’ve spoken to the bloke selling the B600 so got some more information on that. It’s done 30k miles and is the half faired version so I don't know where I picked the 8k up and he’s just put 12 months MOT on it. I think I’m pretty much off the 600 now but will go and have a look anyhow so I can compare. I much prefer the face lift version of the SV-faired version anyhow but they look like they’re more than I want to spend.

I had more confidence on the bandit, once I got used to it (about 2 days). Newer suspension helped alot.
