i first sampled the delights of marijuana when i was 15 and didn't touch it again until i was nearly 17, used to smoke it at weekends after a night out, few of my friends started smoking it daily and i could soon see the effects as they were becoming seriously ****ed up in the head so i stopped it just after my 19th.

seen first hand how ****ed drugs can screw you over so you wont touch anything else

i still puff every now and again....... purely for my broken spine you must realise.... and because of bad influential people

I'm from BC, Canada- it's renowned for growing very potent pot. I'm not going to suggest I've used it myself, as I'm still awaiting permanent residency, but there are very few people I've ever met who haven't - my parents included. I really don't know anyone that's suffered any ill effects due to it, and I know quite a few people who use it regulary.

Having been subject to the US media broadcast across the border, I really thought I'd hear less about it moving to a European country, but the panic/warnings spewed by the media here is a bit ridiculous. You'd think it was responsible for more crime and violence than alcohol.

EDIT- simple possesion has been decriminalised back home, not all that long before it was upgraded in criminal status here. Boo!

Having seen the effects of drugs first hand (long before I joined my job) I have always refused to touch them. I think that they are very dangerous and although some people dont get much effect from them, I think the risk is too high.

I have also now seen how they ruin lives.

Do you drink? Not suggesting anyone should use drugs, but ignoring the politics of what's legal and not, surely alcohol must be the source of most of the drug-related incidents you encounter?

Yes I do drink, however, I think from the OP we are talking about illegal substances.

Anyway, in my area, believe it or not, heroin and diazepam are the biggest cause of crime.

I have seen people, take from that distant family members, start on cannabis and move to heroin. I know that is not the case in all circumstances but cannabis is certainly a stepping stone for the majority of heavy drug users.

Illegal/not-illegal is purely a political decision IMO. Sad that harder drugs are such an issue on your area, but I suspect it could be easily argued that alcohol is at least as big a stepping-stone/gateway drug as pot. How many junkies have never had a drink?

Again, not trying to suggest that people should try/use drugs, but I think the hysteria is overblown. How many potheads are responsible for stabbings or smashing bottles over someones head?

I really think the problem of drugs (including problems associated with alcohol) are a symptom, rather than a cause. I think the majority of users are looking for an escape from everyday life. Solve some of the problems in society and I bet drug abuse tapers off. Or like the US, you can just waste billions on a futile war on drugs.

Err here goes...
A lot of people call cannabis a gateway drug, meaning you pass-through to use other stuff, some say cigarettes are...
I used cannabis a lot in teens, it was 'normal' for where I grew up (holding pen for Jeremy Kyle show) but then it got worse, because the little gang of us when at the dealers would be able to buy other types of drugs, get a bit of speed or some acid and bring it back to the gang, it was all fun and we had a motto which was if you passed out you lost out, then heroin came round.... a lot of people moved on, but myself and a few others moved though to the hard stuff, I was addicted to heroin/crack and most other drugs for over 10 years, ripped the heart out of my life, it killed my sister, and some others too, but in 1995 I stopped. Don’t know why, don’t know why I started or why I stopped or why friends didn't follow same path etc. ... f**k knows.... but drugs and addiction are a truly equal opportunity 'employer' ... anyway you'll all be please to know I work in the prison service now having abstained from all drugs (drink too - devils sweat!!) since 1995 and I am the area manager for prison rehab units across 8 of her majesties hotels.... so people can change... I remember when stood in front of a judge, who sent me to prison for 2 years for shoplifting saying that I was 'beyond rehabilitation' and here I am. I guess you never know which way someone's going to go.... people can guess that yes if you have exposure to drugs and you've had a **** life then you would use drugs to escape... but what about all those rich people? Elton John, Eric Clapton, Davina McCall.. All high profile on record ex users, they were rich had everything ... but still used..... So you cant predict....
