Taking the p*2s that is. Is it just me or does everyone hear nothing but tales of woe with BMW and reliability? Aren't they all made in China now anyway?

Tell me about it lol!
I heard they were rock solid and had great support.
Guy in the shop (mistake number one here) told me avg service was about £120....
I should of phoned for an actual quote instead of listening to the salesman.

The major service (Every 12k or two years which ever is first) involves taking the entire bike apart (litterally).
The minor sevice (every 6k or 1 year) is less intrusive and about £240.

There can only be so much they can check/adjust. Have they given you a breakdown as to what they actually do on a major/minor service? What does the owner manual say?

Hello all

Whilst recovering from the flu and a bad back caused by lying around with the flu I received the latest news on my K1200GT which is in for its 48k service (having actually done 52k):

You may recall it has had the following warranty work:

airbox
sensor brake pads (sensor failed on)
2 off main stands
3 off radiators
gearbox
Clutch (replaced as part of gearbox replacement)
Bottom engine rebuild
headlamp ballast and lamp
starter relay
front forks
front wheel bearing
front wheel

I am now told that it needs a replacement stand as the second replacement has buckled again. This is now not covered by the new warranty but I am arguing that it is a design defect.

The cruise control got stuck on coming off the motorway down to a roundabout in Scotland, good fun going round with the bike screaming at 5k revs with the clutch in.

The throttle control has been a problem with the revs sticking at 3 or 4k revs you roll off and nothing happens then shortly afterwards the revs suddenly drop, not great when you are trying to ride smoothly. The last thing was that the throttle got stuck at 4k revs so I had to be recovered. They said it was the airbox until I pointed out that this had been changed!!!

I'd be spitting feathers if my clutch had gone at 12k. But there's no guarentee's in life, no matter how much mr salesman tells you.

No guarentees indeed however I think I'd be prepared to argue that there is such a thing as quality and craftsmanship. After all, their website promotes their machine as 'The Ultimate Motorcycle'. I think I'd expect a bit more than 12K from a clutch on a BMW.

But at the end of the day a clutch is wear and tear and BMW can quite rightly wash their hands of it no matter how much in the real world it may seem you haven't got a "reasonable" value out of your purchase.

Whilst this is indeed true, and I would have to agree with you, there's still no harm in trying. Don't be defeatist - go get 'em!!
