How many people actually keep a cricket bat/baseball bat/kitchen knife in their wardrobe I wonder?

I currently have a cricket bat in the wardrobe but only because it's a christmas present and hidden, though it is a kids size, but I'd have no hesitation in using it if someone broke in.

I did once break up a scruffle between two blokes on the tube using a rolled up copy of Cosmopilitan magazine like a truncheon. I think they were so shocked that a 5'2" woman had battered them both with a glossy magazine that they stopped shoving each other.

I have tools in my house. Without suggesting that I've prepared weapons to use against intruders, I certainly know I can get to the 24" breaker-bar in a hurry if I need to. In Canada I kept escrima sticks at the side of the bed. A rolled up magazine is definitely effective in a pinch.

Edit -when I was a kid, my parents kept a shotgun under their bed.

Don't bother. They're utterly useless, floppy and very very soft, but still eat loads. Food, not burglars.

Wouldn't want one that was at all agressive -just as long as he looks like he could knock you down and eat you if you invaded his space I hear they're very good with kids as well.

We've had 2 big dogs - an extremely large and intelligent Alsatian, and a Mastiff. The mastiff was bought when the old alsation died, as we got used to having a large dog around, and a mastiff is about the only thing you can guarantee to be bigger than what we had before.

SUCH A DIFFERENCE! Whilst our alsatian was very affectionate to us, he was fiercely protective of our home. Even people used to dogs would not approach him. He had a broad head, large mouth... well he was just very big indeed. He'd stop you in your tracks just with a look. He was elegant, co-ordinated, strong... you get the picture.

The mastiff is bigger, but a floppy bag of fluff. He's clumsy, thick, and utterly chicken. He falls off his own feet when out of a walk. He lies down against things, which then move, fall over, make a noise, and he scarpers, knocking over more things in the process. During a loud shouty argument with my gf, he decided to intervene by running up behind me and, i kid you not, nibbling my bum with his front teeth.

If you want a guard dog, get an alsatian. Only get a mastiff if all you want is an overgrown teddy bear.

More likely to knock you down entirely by accident. Yeah great with kids apart from the clumsiness - there's no malice in him whatsoever. I think it was deliberately bred out of them cos otherwise they would be very dangerous.

It's very wrong that he'll be in jail while the perpetrator isn't . It's all well and good looking back in a cold, analytical courtroom and saying he was too violent. It's different when someone's tied up your wife and child, threatening to kill them, who wouldn't get the red mist and beat the s**t out of him, given a chance. I know I would.

I totally disagree with the judge saying it would somehow be the end of law and order if this type of thing did not result in a custodial sentence. There are extenuating circumstances. Yes - in the heat of the moment he went too far, but that doesn't make him a violent criminal.

If it had just been a burglar there'd have been a case, but someone who's tied up you and your family, threatening to kill them? No - disagree with the verdict completely.

I've seen some really nice great danes - but I think they have a pretty short lifespan? It's a while off yet anyhow as we're not yet ready to buy a house, and I wouldn't have a pet or kids until we have our own place.
