Go ride road when it has thawed out and see if you disagree.

so the police are that stupid that they have to have illuminated signs.

('was taking a prisoner from Colwyn Bay to Caernarfon') so he should be done doubly bad as he endangered the life of another person, in fact just jail him.

Actually I think the reason given was to keep noise down for residents when the A55 dual carriageway was built through Colwyn Bay, but I tend to agree with Y-C. It is a wide dual carriageway with a hard shoulder that is straight with good visibility, so very easy to think 70 is the limit. Locals know it is an enforced 50 limit so keep to the limit. It is a lucrative section for the Arrive Alive and the police due to the number of holiday makers that travel on it and are caught out.

The cop in the OP should know all the above, seeing as the force HQ is located on this stretch. In fact he had probably just come from there.

Y-C .... What I think, or you think makes no difference .....

It makes even less difference given that I assume (?) you haven't considered all the considerations that need to be taken in to account when setting a speed limit ??
  • 85th percentile speed
  • Design speed
  • Road features
  • Crash records
  • Administrative judgment
  • Engineering judgment
  • Political influences
  • Fuel efficiency considerations
  • Traffic flow considerations
  • Potential changes in road conditions
Sometimes life isn't black and white ....

That is exactly my point ..... and a contradiction

Whatever the reason for the limit makes no difference .... we have to respect its there FOR A REASON ....whether we appreciate that reason or not ..... bigger picture my friends.... bigger picture

OK I found this reference on Wikipedia (I know not definitive)

"These restrictions are imposed as added safety precautions because the slip-roads in this stretch are unusually short because of the difficulty of fitting the road into a very narrow area of land, and, due to the road underpassing much of the town, to reduce road surface noise levels."

So road noise was not the only reason.

This is a bit of a derail, seeing as how the fella in question was booked as doing 98mph which is almost 30mph over the highest limits we have in the UK. So whatever the reasons for the 50 limit, he was doing almost double that.
