i made the swap last year (to a 750) and its worth doing, could not get any test rides around here so just read alot of reviews and the gsxr 600 is meant to be good, but in the 600 range the r6 and cbr rr are meant to be alot stronger and when i really looked at prices the 750 was not alot more £ wise so i ended up with that

TBH my back and wrists hurt too much on the gsxr, there better on a zx6r or zzr6, and i cant get on a cbr6 i feel like im on a push bike designed to be a sports bike, short legs long body not comfortable, sit up and beg bike please!
but the gsxr handles better than the sv!

I have a K5X 750. I have ridden a K6 600 as well. I had a K1 Curvey SVS prior to the GSXR, I had both for a while as the intention was to use the SV as winter commuter, but I never rode it as I would always take the GSXR out.

Running costs not much different TBH, gives 120 miles to the fuel light which is roughly what I got from my SV, unless I'm pressing on, worst I've had is 85 miles to the fuel light.

Its heavier on rear tyres than the SV was, but apart from that and the insurance being more I havent really found it anymore expensive.

Most people that say it have either never ridden one, or dont ride them properly (In the right gear etc). Some people just dont like to rev an engine hard, but that is how the 600 IL4 should be used.

Funnily enough I thought exactly the same thing when I first got one. Sadly that soon wears off and you start to feel the same way about it as you did about the SV you had before... always thinking that little bit more would be nice.

+1. People (SV owners in particular) hop off a twin and onto an IL4 expecting to chug around with 3K rpm on the clock! Any labouring engine will provide f'all power!

You have to ride them differently and if you do, you will find there is just as much, if not more midrange than an SV

Bike wasn't in perfect condition anyway and it looked like the brakes would need doing soon.

I am looking to spend a maximum of £1000 on top of what I get for the SV for my next bike, including 100 or so for the extra insurance.

Bike is in Frettons in Leamington if you want to go and test it yourself.
Try a zx6r I'd be interested how you find them back to back.
My mate has a 2006 one with a few trick bits for sale for just over £3.5k - I'm sorely tempted but insurance would be crazy at my age and it'd possibly be a death sentence.

Would advise sellin the sv privately too!

I disagree. The CBR6 powered hornet6 for example does *fsck* all until 5k, thats ~25-30mph in 1st, ie no go below 30. The SV in comparison picks up from ~3k, thats ~10mph.

The SV makes as much torque if not more than the 600's, except they make that at 10k+, the SV is making it at ~7k and can be geared lower because it makes less power which makes it more usable.

I mean see http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/photog...ort-Torque.JPG for example, 2008 GSX-R600, 46.7@11300, in comparison http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...-dyno-zoom.jpg 2003 SV650 47.2@7250

On a similar note Fizz, I had a bandit in the summer and thought the engine braking was pretty similar to the SV. Both 650cc engines...but the bandit was not so heavy initialy after rolling off the throttle. But both engines slow the bike down pretty much the same sort of rate

And for what its worth, it took me ages and ages to get used to riding the bandit in the way an inline four should be ridden. It was only the last fortnight of ownership (i had it a total of 8 weeks) that I was expoloring the upper rev range, and in the final week after deciding that anyhting below 5000 rpm was useless, I was thrashing the poopoo out of it everywhere. Not only did it respond better above 6000 rpm....but above 8000 rom it was a GLORIOUS sound
