Thanks all for the input.

I think I shall just take a couple of days to visit the guitar shops in Southend (Professional Music Technology & Strings Direct), and just sit and play for while & see which I like the best.

And seeing as I seem to be (almost) alone in my opinion of Epiphone I shall try them again !!

Cheers

BTW Dizz - you can tell Peg that he's quite correct the PRS is a good guitar & he bought a beautiful colour one too !! But - it's out of my price range & it's a little too like my Strat for me to be considering it.

I have an Epiphone les paul. It plays ok, sounds acceptable. However I don't like the feeling of it much nowadays. Coming from strats, especially with a nitro neck finish onto the plastic coated epiphone doesn't feel right to me.

But it was my first electric guitar, and I still like playing it because it's just a different feeling and makes me play differently to the strat. However some of the plastic chipped off over the last 8years to reveal the wood underneath.

However, StringsDirect get my vote, i've used them to buy a lot of effects and place a big order every 6months or so for a whole load of strings and picks. I've never had any problems with them and they will price match most places, within reason (i.e. if the other place charges postage and they don't etc they will add that on)

I've got 3 Tanglewoods. Carpentry is impeccable, really nice. I stuck Gibson classic series '57s on a Tanglewood "Chicago" (335 copy, allegedly etc...) which is a bit Les Paulish, you know humbuckers, lots of hard wood etc. I also tarted it up with Grover machine heads, nice bridge, heavy wiring etc. Total cost was about £800 back when the Gibson was about £1300. But my Tanglewood kicks the krap out of a new Gibson, but hey, don't take my word for it-are you in Southend? I'm in Woodfrod. A friend of mine works in a guitar shop about half way between us!
Mike
PS-my other Tanglewoods are a nylon strung classical, (taking advantage of their beautiful woodworking skills) and a bass, which is lovely. I'm going to customise that with a new pick-up too.

I have also just realized I have a vintage les paul copy as well.

Apart from the pickup switch being in the wrong place, it plays ok. I prefer the feel of the neck on the Vintage to the Eipihone. Another nice feature is that it has a double cut away on the neck too

I seem to remember that I didn't like the tone that comes through the pickups to the amp that much (I haven't plugged it in for over a year). But then, that's down to personal preference, and pickups can be changed.
The black one is the Vintage, the red/sunburst one is Epiphone

MrVox: - If you can't find anything in your local shop and want to try either of these two for reference, your welcome to on the way to selkent or any time you are passing.Other than that, as someone else said get to Soho a little earlier, most of the guitar shops on Denmark Street are open until at least 7:30 - 8ish

Sell something.
The silver, the car, the house , your mother in law, anything.

I don't care how close it may look, how good it's pickups are, nothing in the world plays like a real Les Paul.
I've had Strats, telecasters, SG's , and epipohne copy Les paul and SG.
Nothing else even comes close.
Removed the pick guard and chrome covers on the pickups. The thing sounded great through any amp anytime.
There's no finding the sound. Plug it up and it's waiting on you!
And comparing a set in neck to a bolt in neck is like playing a baby grand next to a beginer piano.
Not to mention more natural sustain than you ever thought possible.

Wish I had never sold mine but gave up playing in bands long ago.
Was doing nothing but taking up space under the bed for a few years.

If you're playing in a band it's a must.

There will be two remembered days in your guitar playing history.
The day you got your first guitar and the day you got a Les Paul.
You will never regret a single penny spent on a Les Paul.
That I can promise you.

Stop it !!

Do you have horns & a tail ?

You must be evil personified offering temptation like that !!!

Fortunately, you (probably unknowingly) offered me a 'get-out' clause - because I no longer play in bands - only at home.

But thanks (I think) for your input anyway !!

Don't forget the setup. It won't cost a lot, but will make a world of difference.
That might explain why some cheap guitars play 'better/nicer' than expensive ones.

I have two electric basses - the 'budget' bolt-on £900 bass plays much nicer than my £1500 neck-thru. Both are Warwicks, both have similar neck and body profile, both have the same gauge strings - BUT the bolt-on has just had a decent setup. It's crucial.

...the neck-thru sounds better though - its electrics are a better spec...

I bet the neck-through model sustains forever too!

Supervox- you know he's right!!!

Only thing when you buy a Les Paul is you can't play it- because it's just cost you an arm and a leg!

Aside from my dream of owning a Gibson LP, I also saw a Guitarist review of this guy's guitars-

Oh- and don't forget that replica guitars can be set up beautifully too and pickups can be changed if you don't like 'em.

Hmmm- British built shred machine that looks a little like an Ibanez, but also looks like it's got something most Ibanez don't- a soul! Gods I want one of these! Look for the Full Maple Pack- mahogany back and neck, Maple Cap- lovely blue stain- and birdseye maple fretboard. Sweeeeet! Now-where's the cash to ask for a seven string model?!
