At work we write all IT stuff off over 4 years, it used to be 3, but in these penny pinching times you have to make sacrifices.

Ironically though, the financial planning behind it went astray, as we were no longer buying in the quantities the price went up.

I'm working on three years at the moment, it doesn't help that the machines that were bought before I arrived there was no logic behind so it was whatever was cheap, so I am constantly repairing or re hashing to get by.

Anything from the office over three gets given to a site manager so if it gets lost or stolen or left on the train its no big deal!

Spend double the money initially and buy a Macbook. You can pick up as-new refurbished laptops from Apple with quite a hefty discount. Keep it for 3 years and you'll still be able to sell it on Ebay for nearly what you paid for it. It's much more of an initial investment but, unlike PC laptops, Macs hardly depreciate.
