I dont like clip ons for the road, only use them on the track bike. I have a comfort kit on the Trumper & my SV is a nekked
As people have already said its to put you lower for aerodynamics & Blah Blah Blah

Clipons are for racing. Handlebars are for comfort.

Makes sense to me that if you want your torso to be lower, and your elbows tucked in out of the wind, it would be more comfortable to also have your arms lower. Since the bars are already on the top yoke, and you need them connected to the forks to steer, the logical place to put them is further down the forks. You loose a bit of leverage for turning the bars and counter steering, but since they are designed for speed, not a slow control obstacle course, that's not a huge problem.

There is another massive disadvantage of clipons, if you are into riding properly on little windy back roads, the upright position given by handlebars gives you a big advantage in seeing over stuff.

Hmmm....think anything else would look a bit odd on mine, so I have them because the bike was designed with them.
