Apart from the distance there is less traffic yet we think nothing of driving or riding to Scotland
You'd be surprised... Many folks I know from darn sairf seem to think Scotland takes weeks to get to and might as well be Greenland for all it matters.

I combine both. Road on my own to portugal through France and Spain this year to meet mates at a festival, then rode home. Best of both worlds, they carried most of my festival gear for me and I got to ride alone through some absolutely stunning roads and mountains. week of sitting by a lake and mountainbiking about (yep, they took my bike for me too!) the back on the motorbike for more fun. Wicked!

Nice one Philbut, I'm hoping to persuade some mates to take my push iron out to France for me so I can ride with them and ride down on the bike. I did this a few years back with some kayaking buddies, Alpine white water and a motorbike made for a superb fortnight.

Like Tim said, just do it.

Biking Holiday!

Haven't done one for 30 years. The wife says holidays is time to be together, the bike is to get away from her. So ner the twain shall meet.

Yes.

I remember a few years ago a small group of us used to go out at weekends on a regular basis. Me having to cover the most distance to get to the meeting point very rarely (never) planned a route to ride. Then one time I was told by the group it was my turn to come up with a destination. So I did. Malaga. So we did. Awesome time was had.

But when discussing this with non bikers they couldn't understand how this was supposed to be fun. They suggested we all fly there, hire a bike for a couple of days and fly back again. Some people really don't get it.

People's ideas of distance are very strange indeed, there was a quiz on local radio the other day, the question..
"As the crow flys, how far is Lapland from Sheffield?"
Contestant one, What do you mean as the crow flys?
DJ, How far is it in a straight line
C1, 13,000 miles
C2, 10,000 miles

DJ, the correct answer is 1,3xx miles so contestant 2 wins.

There is no place on earth that is 13,000 miles away.

I want to go round scotland on the bike in 2011, parents think i'm mad.

Considering the earths circumference is 26,000 miles, that is just about technically true

Yeah, but it's not spherical (it's an ellipsoid), so even if the circumference at the equator is 26k, it's likely that the smallest perimeter of an ellipse that results from sectioning the earth with any plane containing opposite points on the equator is considerably smaller than 26k... maybe even 24k...
Then again, the length differs greatly if flying or driving... it might be 30k when driving (straight)... "As the crow flies" implies air distance though... hmm... I'm just very bored by what I have to do right now...

You mean it isn't? I've only ever flown there!
