If they are moving a group of people they will generally set down policy guidelines for what they will and won't cover.

I'd add a couple of things to the list for discussion with HR:

* Hotel bills for you and Mrs Fizz to spend a few weekends in the new area looking at properties because commuting up there for a day won't work very well.

* Some indication of what happens if selling your house takes longer than expected

* What sort of timetable they are looking at because you may need to arrange accommodation near the new location if you are unable to move by their planned changeover date.

Fizz; Dave and Bri have got most the answers.

The few people I know that have been through this had to haggle a fair resettlement package.

I'd have a think on what you need to ask and see what the HR come out with.
Good aswel Mate!

Been through this with my company.
Company bought my old house, but for less than true worth, however it was the least hassle method. Company paid removals, all soliciter fees, surveys and stamp duty on new house. Company paid a flat incidentals of around 3k, which is allowed by the tax man. Company paid for hotel nights and hire car for family when looking for house, but oddly would not pay kennel fees for dog.
All in all company relocations are not too stressful, and you shouldn't be disadvantaged.
look out for the handcuff clause though - I had to sign a document to say I would not leave the company for 2 years, else have to repay their costs, which they estimated at £40,000

I moved a few years ago with my hubby (now ex) as the navy moved him to Scotland from Gosport. They supplied removal people who would come in and pack up the entire house, move stuff to Scotland and move it into storage if required. Unfortunately my house didnt finalise until Thursday night and I had to be out Monday at 12 so there was not enough warning for them. Had to pack up my house myself and because I was expecting them to do it all, I had not done anything. 2 kids under 6, hubby at sea - fun weekend not. Hope your move goes smoothly and you both get settled in Southampton.

When I relocated 25 years ago, rther than live in a local hotel until such time as I had bought a new house I stayed at my parents 20 miles from my new work and commuted. When I tried to recover the costs it was turned down on the grounds that the inland revenue would not pay commuting costs.

I recognition that I had in fact saved the company 12 weeks of hotel bills, they suggested I re wrote my expense claim as :-

Pre agreed relocation costs £xxxxx,xx

And suggested I add an extra grand to what I was asking for.

My mates dad, moved from being the works superintendent responsible for one of Leylands factories to engineering director at London Transport and negotiated a contract that said they would fund the difference between his current home and an equivalent down sarf.

Once they agree they they find he currently lives in a 6 bedroom bungalow with swimming pool, paddocks/stables. So they fund it with a 5 year lock in. Then terminate his contract after 2 years. He was a very happy man.
