Have you got a particular job in line that you know accepts any degree whatsoever, or do you just feel that you need any old degree in order to get a good job?

Which degree really is more important than how quickly you can obtain it. What do you like doing? What is a cuppla years more studying in the grander scheme of things if you get to do what you like, and not just being restricted in what you can/want to do because you chose any old degree based on length of studying/someones suggestion?

...and some courses will be off limits, eg if you know nothing about science then nuclear physics is not for you.

Firstly alot of courses have entry requirments e.g. GCSE C or above in maths and english or/and a certain amount of UCAS points. Do you have any Alevels?

I'm looking into going to uni myself, I've got a diploma in vehicle technology but that wasn't enough UCAS points for what I wanted to do so I'm hopefully going to be doing a 'Access to higher education diploma' Which is recognised by all uni's. They're for people like me who didn't take Alevels who now wish to go to uni, this course is only a year long as opposed to the 2 years Alevels will take. http://www.accesstohe.ac.uk/ this may not be ideal for you though becsause it's a full time course.

This is a good place to start: - http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/coursesearch/

You can use this to search all the courses available (2011) and all the information on the course - Number of years, entry requirments ect.

All degrees (as far as im aware) take 3 years, and you can only get funding for 1 from the government, why waste 3 years on a pointless degree when you could spend 3 years doing a degree that interests you.

If you do a degree you do not enjoy, you will not finish/pass it - TRUST ME ON THIS

I did a degree i really enjoyed and in the 3rd year I got sick of doing all the work etc, and that was in a subject i enjoyed, in the 3rd year i was spending 10 hours a day studying and doing my final year project / dissertation, and believe me it was a tuff time.

you say you need any degree at any grade, it may be worth giving them a ring to check, as getting a 3rd in a degree is worst than not having a degree, most students that graduate with a 3rd have to think of a way to blag away 3 years of their life on their CV pretending they never went to uni (harsh but true)

Its also worth noting that after the age of 21, A-levels and UCAS point mean nothing as you are classed as a mature student, you just need to be able to justify you going on the course. I only had a handful of GCSE's but I had worked with computers/networks for years

Dave

When I did my degree I did not have any 'A' levels. They accepted my vocational qualification an ONC in mechanical engineering.

The main issue for me was whilst my engineering background did provide me with some advantages (My degree is Mechanical Engineering) my lack of a science background made the chemistry part of material difficult. It was expected you already knew basics. I never even did chemistry at school.

If you do your degree with the OU you can do it as quickly as you like. You'll find that with the qualifications you've already got you'll get points awarded to you. When I did mine with the OU you had to get 360 points to get a degree (with so many at level 3 to get an honours) but I had 180 points awarded to me for my HNC. Each full course was 60 points, and you could do as many as you like in a year.

Hope that helps
Lou

Maybe a London external degree?

I suggested Irish Studies because you're Irish. Liverpool is a top notch university and the department is well known. It would be easier I think to persuade the admissions tutor that you want to read Irish Studies because you come from Paddy Land. It really does help if you have some empathy with the subject, else you'll have 3 years of hell.

I've got two friends doing OU degree's at the moment. They do as much or as little as they can depending on how it fits in with their lives. Both are getting on well and throughly enjoying it.

Dont rule it out, its always an option.

Even a degree in the Arts has a minimum sentence of three years Dave.

A 'proper' degree as YC would put it, does not necessarily guarantee you a job either. You could do a degree in rocket science and get a pass grade of say a 2:1 and in the current jobs market, and it wouldn't be good enough. I knows this for sure.
