Thanks for your comprehensive reply, I'd no doubts you or anyone else involved in this sort of competition were being cruel, in fact I dare say your dogs are loved more than most.

Was just curious about their behaviour, I've seen dogs do all sorts of things to 'please' their owners.

FB annoys me sometimes... i can't see half the updates i used to on there

I think i forgot to introduce our new "baby" she is now 11 months. She is full sister to Lucien (a repeat mating), and boy does she look and act like him. We call Lucien and Selene "the twins" they even share a braincell!

It is in our competition rules that baiting isn't allowed, nor is punishment if they don't pull or harsh treatment. Anyone caught doing it is banned from competition.

This is why we do not allow non pulling breeds to compete. There are some breeds that will do anything for their owners, eg collies, retrievers etc. It is why such breeds also make bad sled dogs as they rely on their owners too much to tell them what to do. A husky/malamute will do as the owner asked, but if it is at the cost of his own safety then he will refuse and many arctic explorers lives have been saved by dogs that refuse to go over some ice packs.

It is why, as much as i wanted Lucien to pull the 2500lbs, there is no way i could have persuaded him to do it if he didn't want to There is one girl who competes and she will get to 1300lbs and then lay down and refuse to move, it is quite funny to watch as her owner is pretty much begging her to get up, and this dog is giving her mum no attention and looking the other way!

Is that something like..

You can drag a horse to water, but you can't make him drink?

I can't see the photo's but that is and impressive list of achievements - no wonder you are proud!!

I also knew that about the breed. I quite like the fact they have that little streak to them
