I have to admit that at idle the VFR is pretty quiet compared to my SV. But it's nothing a good blip of the throttle won't cure.

Ok I didn't know this. Is this true? So pulling up next to a car at traffic lights is legal but just in front (to give you a bit of a headstart/make it obvious you're there) is not?

Oh and found this

Where is it illegal to filter?

As with any manoeuvre, you must not cause danger or force other vehicles to alter course or speed. Typically it’s not a matter of where, but when. There are a few situations where it would be illegal to filter. Two that spring to mind is passing queuing traffic in a no overtaking zone (e.g. solid white lines or after a no overtaking sign) or on the approach to a crossing, with zigzags.

The roads around kingston are a mess (although the one way system is nice to have a quick run round) so im all for the filtering, but dont beat urself up about it, same as any town on a busy day suns out so people decide to have a care free life, just suspect everyone is out to be road kill and youll be fine.

That's nonsense anyway MYC, you can filter in a solid white line zone, so long as you don't have to cross the SWL. I don't know if the rest is true, but given that it's been written as fact I'd also ignore everything else written there, whoever wrote it they are obviously no expert.

Well yes MYC, if the car has stopped on the line at the lights/crossing you can't legally pull up in front of it can you?

what if its at the line before the bicycle box? Still classed as illegal? Even though everyone does it?

edit: gah, you've all confused me now :S

For a change, this is a section where the highway code is clear:
Quote:
You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines. You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.
For this purpose, the stop line before the cycle box is as far as you can go - strictly, you're only allowed into that box if you couldn't stop for the main stop line on the amber phase, or you're riding a pedal cycle.

As soon as you've both passed the stop line though, its all good... get a move on

For solid white lines, the rule is that you must not cross the line, not that you must not overtake, and there are exceptions to that as well.

Ok cheers Ollie. Is there a chance you could get an awkward copper who pulls you up for sitting in the box at traffic lights? I'll be honest I tend to sit half in the box on purpose when filtering, just to make it bloody obvious I'm there being on a small bike. Because I have L plates does everyone just assume I can't stop at the line then?

I rarely get an opportunity to overtake anything anyway on my 125 (although it's a great feeling when I do!), let alone contemplate on solid whites!
