I spy a noisy exhaust - I need one of them! Those tyres look far more road biased than the motocross ones mine came with too!

If you look at the Autotrader pic of mine above you can see how sculpted out my seat is compared to your standard one!! Mine also has Talon lowering links but I am going to fit the standard ones back on as it is a bit low on the SM wheels.

Magic aint they!

Fallen head over heals with mine, for many of the reasons you've listed inc keeping my licence and not been able to keep 2 bikes due to the nipper.

I've had mine a few weeks now and I'm already spending all my spare pennies on it to tart it up, like yours mine is the 400s but came with the SM rims and tyres. Similar deal to yours infact with 2 new sets of rubber inc in the sale. Although I prefer that yours is a little more of a blank canvas where as mine was owned by a DRz forum member and as such a lot of the "typical" mods have already been done so I cant spend much tinker time on it

Nor did mine come with the 310mm SM disc, instead its the standard 250mm dia S disc and therefore no adaptor bracket was included. I wont need one though once I've fitted the SM USD forks but I will be needing to buy a 310mm disc.

I take it your not going to be needing that lowered seat then Skip? cough cough going up for sale is it?

Oh and +1 on the exhaust but get a full system, at the same time remove the 1st-3rd solinoid and take out the pair valve then get the puppy rejetted to suit wheelie good fun.

Yup - we have a 1 year old so 2 bikes was never going to happen!

Have you ridden a standard DRZ? I just wonder how much difference there is with a full system and the 3X3 mod etc? What gearing are you running?

Brakes are vastly improved with the larger disk - tyres probably helped there too.

Nice day again today here in Norfolk - I want to be out on it!!

Norfolk? Norwich is where I picked mine up from - typical, we could have both saved a fortune on fuel collecting them if we'd spotted each others first.

Yeah I tested the standard SM, I've also done an off road day last year in Fueterventura on the 400s that was a days riding and I didnt hurt like I would if I'd been on the SV for the same length of time. (Another factor in the purchase). The standard sm felt a lumpier with its delviery than mine, I dont know which bit of the mods etc it is which have made the most difference because as I said it isnt me who's done them but yeah I'd say the differnce was noteable.

My top end sounds higher than yours although not by much, 94 is the highest indicated I've seen but I couldnt tell you if that was WOT or partial. 0-68 is just seemless power right the way through the gears but Im in top gear wel before 70 and the power starts to die off then until finally at anything over 80 the throttle responce seems none existant.

I believe I've got the standard SM gearing on mine, 15t/41t then the off road rims have a 43t rear sprocket althogh I do intend to do the 39mm FCR carb mod and at the same time get go one larger on the front sprocket to balance the power lost out but give an increase at the top end.

FYI You've got drz400uk.org.uk and Thumpertalk, the org seems very quiet but the bonus of that is everyone seems quite friendly even if a lot of its seems to be people quoting what they've read on Thumpertalk. Saying that though the downside of thumpertalk is that its an internatioal site with mainly americans been either far too complicated or asking really dumb questions.

Im using TT (thumpertalk) for my how to's and education, then using drz400uk.org to ask specific questions and see what other brits have done regarding modding options.

Hehe - that is typical!

Yup I am up into 5th well before 70mph - before 60 most of the time unless overtaking and working it hard. I am pretty sure if I had held the throttle open longer it would have crept up towards the mid 90s but there was no point in doing that as thats not what its about. Someone has just replied on DRZ-org that 15/41 is the standard SM gearing - I am sure I counted 16 teeth on the front of mine - will whip the cover off and look later.

Not really intending to go mad with it - but would like an exhaust - first reply on DRZ-org says get a £400 Yoshi system - errr...! lol

Yeah not sure if its the nature of the bikes or just those on that forum but they do tend to think £400 is a perfectly reasonable price for a Mod.

I think BMK was refering to one like this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/YOSHIMURA-RS-3...item43a509de92

Which im sure is mint but its defo costs a bomb, the reciepts for the purchase of my full arrow system show it costing £250, I supose it depends if you want it to sound pretty or improve umph especially as the rejet will no doubt cost a few quid too. From what I gather the re-ject is needed because the factory header has flow restrictor of some razzle dazzle fitted, either way those who swap the header pipes without a remap have posted a few threads complaing of it running poo.

Regarding the teeth on your front sprocket, yours is the S model so it may be that the S comes with 16 standard or that the previous owner fancied a little more top end maybe, just guessing but its possible.

There are plenty of £20mods/ tweaks/tarty crap you can do to it though, brakelines of one of the million and twelve "zeta" products out there to replace OEM stuff of course a lot of that depends on how often you're going to be getting it dirty.

I've got a 400sm and think its a cracking bike. I've also got off road wheels to go on it too. I run the standard 15/41 with the sm wheels and run 15/43 with the off road wheels, this way I don't have to muck about changing the chain.
As for tyres have a look at Avon distanzia's. They are 90% road and 10% off road and in my opinion have better grip and better wear rate than the dunlops. My rear 208 only lasted 1600 miles.
You can get them in the supermoto compound (which is what I am using) and also in dirt wheel sizes

I've got the avon distanzias on mine, they are brilliant on road but crap off road.
I've got a lot more miles out of mine as well.

I only have a scorpion end can on mine which I made fit the standard down pipe, it sounds pretty good with the baffle in, it pops terrible with it out.
It was running lean when I first put it on so increased fuelling a bit and noticed a bit of extra power.
I'm not sure a full system would improve mine much tbh.
Im thinking of upgrading to the 39mm carb which should help things

I've seen the bigger front disc mods on eBay which comes with disc and bracket, may invest in that in the future too.

How did you "increase the fuelling a bit"? Bigger jet?

Did a silly thing this morning - ran out of petrol whilst overtaking a car! 90.2 miles showing on the trip - doh!! Silly woman slowed down with me too as I was on the wrong side of the road!! No harm done - onto reserve and few presses of the magic button and we were off again - now I am wondering how far I can go on reserve...!
