Dunno if this will help but my short-list was

SV650S - bought
Bandit 6
Yamaha Thundercat
ER6
ZX6R (about 2000 model)

And the oddball, Honda duville, because my mate had one and kept banging on about how good it was, he has since seen the S shaped light and got himself a GSXF 650 and loves it to bits.

Stop messing around and get a really nice SV, everything else is second rate. Make sure you get a good one, not any old one, but a real good. Hey this one

Thanks for all the replies, we are leaning heavily to an SV, was tempted at a Bandit but nobody really gets excited about talking about them so kind of puts you off a little. Having a few test quotes done online shows any Supersport class bike more than doubles the insurance so they're out. I really like the ER-6N, and so far its between that and an SV. A trip out to a few bike dealers maybe on the cards soon to check them out.

As for the 7 year forum stalk, that took me by surprise too - I think I signed up while debating SV or GSXR so came looking for pictures and info, surely I must hold some record now for the longest time without posting

the sv is a great bike let down by the suspension, brakes and seat. i personally don't feel the need for anything bigger or faster. it gets me to where i want to go.
