Another vote for dogs. They are a good deterrant even if they would do nothing if the scrote got in.Most burglars will take the line of least resistance, and that tends to be the house with no four legged alarm system.

I have 8 legs of protection, but would you be scared of 2 chew-wa-wa crosses?

One of them has Jack in, but they only bark at leaves and grass, never really at humans unless playing

Have you thought about a security camera and light out the back?
something from deal extreme or one of these
http://www.maplin.co.uk/250gb-4-ch-h...-access-587635

Also a communicating alarm like this

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=10647514&fh_loca tion=//catalog01/en_GB/categories%3C{9372015}/categories%3C{9372042}/categories%3C{9372188}/specificationsProductType=wireless

Costco have them for about 200 I think.

If they want to get in they will unfortunately.

I saw those response alarms for £70 not long ago but didn't go for it as I hadnt heard of them. You can get a 2 PIR yale wireless system for £100-£130.

I was about to swap my rotting back door (/mental images!) for a UPVC one - you've put me off now hong!

Going to look in to wireless door opener alarms myself.

If it was a targeted are you concerned you'll be next or just that you've seen how your security can be breached?

It's just a deterrent at the end of the day, most doors can be done it with a swift kick. I'd be glad they had to go equipped.

Thanks Pookie.

The maplins one looks really good actually, combined with an alarm of some kind. I will probably get that one or very similar after some research.

Well, aside from just protecting myself against general theives, in this instance if it is who we think it is, their primary concern is not going to be stealing for profit - it will be stealing to scare/cause grief.

I am almost certain something simple like an alarm would scare them off, as they are already on the run from the police (jail time).

Before this I never really thought about it too much to be honest - just assumed locked doors would be enough!

If only I could rig a shotgun aimed at the back door...
