It says that not all 5W oils are same, it can be huge difference between brands.
Instead going by W you go by viscosity at 40 degree.

i did catch that, but how to reference a different "better" choice of oil is where i'm left behind. lots of numbers and acronyms that make little sense to me.

It is not about better choice. For instance if you have 5W oil that flows as 10W from other brand than you did not really change anything by switching to other one. Just because it says 5W on it does not mean it is thinner than stock. If you can find stock and what you have now in chart you can compare to see which way you made change.

i was looking to see if my oil was on there, but there aren't any AMSoil products on the chart.

Than you buy same brand oil if you want to change.

so i looked up the retail specs for my brand of oil and it shows the 40C viscosity as 15.7 right smack in the middle of the 5wt section of the chart. the medium #10 AMS has 32.1 at 40C. is this the right area to be looking in regards to keeping near the intended stock weight oil? i didn't get to compair to the chart before work and it won't show the pic here.

I wouldn't worry about keeping near stock.

well, by near stock i meant the intent of using "10wt" oil not the stock feel.

Okay, I've decided to order in some Silkoline Pro RSF 7.5wt. It sits firmly in the top of the 10wts on the chart embee posted and has a high VI. Plus, I can actually get my hands on it :P
