It doesn't break it. Think of it like formatting a pc. You just restore the factory defaults & it goes back to its normal sim locked state

I finks you have misunderstood mate. I was merely responding to stuuk saying in the case of a warranty claim dont send it back jailbroken. But, if you are sending it back it must be broken...so how do you reset a broken phone?

Ive looked into this issue a lot recently and sad;y discovered no one has come out with an unoficial unlock for the 4 yet, unless you have an old baseband that you can load onto it that is.

jailbreak was easy on mine but sadly i had to pay the gits at orange £20 to unlock it, good news is that its an official unlock so i can jailbreak it and update the software via itunes and then jailbreak it again.

if you are happy to wait a while make sure you check the Dev teams website for updates, they will be the ones who will come up with the unlock before anyone else i think, at least their website will tell you if its been done by someone else.

How many phones do you hear of that are bricked? Not many, if any...

If you research (which I have done lots when I used to follow the jail breaking scene), the faults for warranty are mainly for when the phone shows 'no signal' or perhaps a vibrating speaker (both problems which you are still able to boot the phone). Anything else would involve an insurance jobby.

Most jailbreakers know a little more than the average phone user and therefore know about booting in DFU mode etc. So personally I would never worry about jailbreaking/warranty issues.

Ok, thanks for the lively debate, as usual!
Info,
Iphone 4
Ios 4.3.5
Modem firmware 04.10.01

Baseband I have no idea, or is that another term for firmware?

The Swedish provider will only unlock after 12 months (8 months from now) and that at a cost of nearly 40 quid.

I have done quite a lot of reading online but get a little confused with all the jargon and numbers, would really appreciate somebody in the know saying 'do x, y and z and that will work for your phone'. If that's possible!
Thanks!

as long as you dont update the the phone to iO5 you will be able to use a piece of hardware called a gevey sim (you can update to Ios5 but you will need to preserve your base band = **Modem Firmware** before doing so)

http://www.geveysim.org/ try ebay and amazon for resellers.

Thanks Hindle8907.
A couple of questions about the gevey sim though,
I read on one site that you have to install/activate the gevey sim every time your phone loses signal, e.g. driving through a tunnel. Is that the case?
Am I right in thinking that the gevey stays in the phone with the micro sim?
Thanks!

I think they've been mentioned but no-one put a link up to the iphone Dev Team - maybe not the easiest thing to follow though.

Is the Gevey sim one that goes over the top of your regular sim? I used a similar type thing on mine & it got stuck & broke the sim release catch. Didn't work either, annoying all round (it was a different one on a different phone tho)

I used to use one on my old 3g's, worked like a charm had to re-install it a few times but nothing to the extent where it became a problem.
Yes the gevey stays in the phone with the sim.
I have also recommended gevey to friends and they seem to be getting on fine.

Thnks for all the advice, I've ordered a Gevey from ebay. Under a tenner including postage, so worth a go!
I'll report back when I've tried it out.
Thanks!
