Also on a carbed bike take the choke plungers out and ensure they are clean, the springs are in good nick, and the cables aren't rusty/cruddy and sticky. The choke plungers need only be a fraction off the seats to cause the hot idle to go completely to pot.

The carb balance itself is probably the easiest thing to do.

The other thing is the idle mixture setting. This is a lot more tricky on an SV because it's very awkward (but not impossible) to get to the screws while the engine is running, and it really needs a little experience to do it "by ear". Start by making sure they are set to teh nominal value (can't remember what it is off hand, you turn them in until they "stop", without forcing anything, then back off a certain amount, typically 1 1/2 turns or similar).
