They display a VEL, but the cost is zero.

If one is out of date, we can't use the vehicle.

Reason? No point the Police - funded by the Govt, paying the same Govt for a VEL.

Technically vehicles maintained in a police garage are exempt MOTs as well.

It's a bit like the tax thing, just because the police are exempt doesn't mean they have to use the exemption. Public perception being what it is I guess they figure it's simply easier to MOT them than to have to put up with the "one rule for them one rule for us" brigade (even if that is true!)
