On the curvy the wire from the battery gets joined to several others inside the loom at a point just about level with the back of the fuel tank. On my dads curvy this internal connection had rotted to the point that the bike stopped running. Had to strip the loom back and splice in some new wire as the rot had spread quite a way up the copper.

Success !!!!
I made up a test lamp...great invention.
4 pin connector on starter relay was ok, so tested the red wire along rear of tank.
Where the cables come together in a kind of Y red wire seems to turn to go to front of the bike and the red/brown comes from the direction of the starter relay and at the Y turns back towards the fuse box.
When i took off the tape at this point I was met with 4 ends, all green and powdery. The red and red/brown had both broken.
As both these cables were wrapped together in tape seperate from all the others I was unable to see under the tape prior to the lot falling to bits.
I connected red to red and red/brown to red/brown and everything worked ok.

Yorkie - Am I right with the connections Ive remade cos you mention in your reply that the red splits into 2 at this point. I just seem to have the main red wire coming from starter relay and turning to the front of the bike at the Y, unless there was some splitting and crimping under the tape beside the corrosion which I was unaware of.

I thought there were 3 ends you'd find actually,
1 starter relay
2 goes back to fusebox (powers dashboard to keep trip meter settings etc)
3 goes forward to ignition switch

But I will check my wiring diagram for you tomorrow...

Success now!!!
Yorkie Chris was right...
When i build the bike back up after connecting the red to red and red/brown to red./brown, the fuel light didnt work, the rev counter didnt work and the mileometer was all 8's.
I thought i had mucked sometthing else up so took it all back to bits to check all the wiring. I concluded that the original break was still causing the problem.
I tried connecting all fours "broken ends" (2 reds and 2 red/browns) together and like magic everything worked.
The short answer is that the red and red/brown wires have to be connected together in a bunch. I tidied them up and connected them properly and since then the bike has been fine.
Weeks of heartache all for 2 broken wires.

Thank you all for this, I would have taken forever & a day to find the fault on my 2002 Curvy. I've just cleared up exactly the same issue on mine after a week of fruitless faulting, including the purchase of a now unwanted flasher/sidestand relay. To make things worse both the +ve connections on the starter relay harness crumbled when trying to find the problem. For any other sufferers the five way connection on mine was located in the loom just where the front seat bolt lives, see photo. I also had to strip the red ignition switch lead back halfway along the tank before it was free of rust, unreal.
