For me the SMT was on the limit (after trade in) but the afternoon I demo'ed it made the decision a lot less difficult. However I couldn't justify a Ducati Multistrada's additional £3-4K cost when compared to the SMT considering the ride quality. For me it's not so much the cost for any one bike but how it compares in the quality versus money stakes with the alternatives.

The next bike I get will be with a decent part-ex against it so I may well find myself having a ceiling of £13-14K OTR for it (assuming ~£7K for the SMT in a couple of years). Or I could find myself buying a second hand Multistrada 1200 Touring next and not spending a lot after the part-ex...time will tell.

At the end of the day life is too short to hold back on what you really want, so long as you don't break the bank and spend all the savings. I just need to keep the other half in the dark where I can...for example she went a bit mental when she found out how much I spent to get the SMT, she thought I had spent a lot less

The NSR cost me about £1200 and then, when I traded it in, the SV was effectively only a £500 upgrade. That was perfect, because I couldn't have stretched to much more at the time. I have a bought a new vehicle just once (the previous Volvo), because I was in the lucky position of having the money available and I reckon everyone should have the fun of speccing a brand new vehicle at least once. Wouldn't do it again though, second-hand every time. Mrs DJF bought the V-Strom new but, in fairness, it was only a couple of hundred quid more than the ex-demo she'd looked at anyway.

If I ever have more than £5k to spend on a bike, you'll all know because I'll be on here asking for advice on how to spend it!

Personally around £5k, but that line is getting muddied atm, as the current ktm duke and incoming husqvarna 650 strada have got my attention big style

I have only ever had 2 bikes, a curvy SV @ £2k and my pointy SV @ £2250. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want a street triple but £4k - £5k on a bike I will use all year round and will live under a stormex??? It would be too good for that sort of treatment. I would be gutted if it even got rained on.

If its what you want then go for it, you only live once.. some of you might of heard about YOLO (you only live once) anyway i hate that saying

but seriously... i dont think you need to pay alot for a bike you want aslong as its what you want, no point cutting corners because your just not going to enjoy it, better getting something you then you dont actually want nevermind the price - might not make sense, but more thought needs to come into things

£5,000 max till i become a millionaire

'I think' Peg paid 7kish with trade in on the z1000 for the ZZR14. In his opinion it was a good deal for a bike with 750 miles on it and s few months old. We look at the new versions and can't justify paying what they ask for them now. Can't remember off top of my head but its somewhere between 12 and 14k or something.......rediculous. He's had that bike for four years now and even though its got nearly 40k on it, he'd rather keep it than cough up all that for a newer and not necessarily better model.

As for keeping all that money under a stormex.......its not that bad. The Zs lived under one for three years, but we're in the middle of building a man cave, so it can finally go back to living under a proper roof, as I have never liked that situation. You don't stick a 10k bike under a stormex, but when you have no choice etc. However Kwaks are well made at that price
