I was under the impression that you had to have a certain gap space either side of ever character, meaning your border would have to be further away.

Taken from the dvla website

Motorcycle number plates should have a:

character height - 64 millimetres
character width - 44 millimetres (except the figure 1 or letter I)
character stroke - 10 millimetres
space between characters - 10 millimetres
space between groups - 30 millimetres
top, bottom and side margins - 11 millimetres (minimum)
vertical space between groups - 13 millimetres

so by my calculation for a standard 2 letter, 2 number, 3 letter registration the smallest legal plate could be
228mm x 163mm or 8.9" x 6.4"
so to go smaller legally as others have said get a private plate!

as for cost I have no idea!

Legal £10 from Ron Parkinson.
My show plate was £12 but you pay for the badge and a logo with boarder(a character not correctly formed, slopiing is its naughty bit)

I was thinking of one with the GB logo already on it for riding abroad, but none of the ones I've seen on ebay offer the option...

Dyzio, I got a motorbike sized GB sticker on the ferry (yes I forgot!) for a fiver. They are about £3 on the net, so get a new plate and sticker for under a tenner. I think it looks good on my bike...

Yeah, I've had one of the stick on ones before, but thought about just getting it done properly since I'll need a new plate soon...

You can't see it properly, but it's one of those adhesive ones with the Scottish flag and "SCO" with an EU symbol.

You also forget that it needs to display the name and postcode of a REGISTERED number plate maker.

There's not much options on the 675 due to the under seat exhaust, the above sticker on the plate looks like pretty much it.

Plate ordered, hope this one lasts the next 2 days

The new numbers/letter's are a pain on bikes.
Just too much to squezee in.
You can soon peel it of wonce you get home again
