I am using a Netgear Ready NAS Duo v2, 2TB (1 with and 1 free with unit)! Great so far.

Well brought back on to topic Nostrils...

Thanks for the input. I actually want to run SVN on it, along with hosting VMware images so I think I'll need something a little more beefy. Netgear don't really seemed to have moved forward in terms of functionality it seems.

When I upgraded my PC, the old one (minus the noisy stuff) went into the attic as an SVN repository, SFTP server and general purpose bit bucket.

Did you use any kind of resilience? Or any NAS software?
I did wonder about doing something like that but not really convinced it is the right option for me

Once again, HP Micro Server

Can do alot more with it than a NAS, costs a little more but will serve you better.

I have a Buffalo NAS I use at home , handy little tool . I bought one as my external hard drive got pulled off the table and hit the deck . I did a fair bit of research on them and it isn't the best but for home use and what I paid for it , it'll do . The main point that people have with them is speed over the network and whether they are multi drive or not . One brand kept coming up as being very good for about £400 with no drives populated but I cannot remember the name now . Was more than I was going to spend anyway

My main machine runs mirrored HDDs, and I backup my photos via SFTP to my old PC in the loft. I also run monthly standalone backups to an external drive which spends the rest of its time in a fire safe.

If I was keeping significant amounts of work on the SVN server I would want it running mirrored drives and daily backups to an external USB drive. This shouldn't be expensive:
2 x 500Gb internal drives = £100
1 x 500Gb external drive = £60
Ubuntu = free
The only other cost is your time setting up file system mirroring and regular backups.

I would prefer this to a proprietary NAS box because in the event of a hardware failure I can get my data back online fairly easily, either by connecting the external HDD to a laptop or moving the internal drives into another cheap PC. The problem I see with small NAS systems is that they are only on sale for a couple of years. After that it could take days or even weeks to find a replacement unit if there's a hardware failure.

Just my thoughts,

Keith.
