For 500 id have it. Ask yourself can you do all the work on it yourself?. Has it ever had a service eg. Valve clearances done?

Worst scenario would be getting your dosh back by reselling it, trade in or selling it in bits.

I'd have a close look at the sprockets (chains had it), oil cooler hoses and the oil seals on the forks. Lift the front end up to have a look at the front stanchions without preload. They look like the original fork seals to me, at that age and mileage they are past their best.

That front cylinder might be ok, it could be road grime making it look bad.

Best to strip it right back (I'd personally to looking to drop the engine too), then do all the bearings (about £100 tops to buy). New shock; hagons are less than £300, or search for rear shock swap on here. New chain and sprockets too, they look fecked
OTT.

What would dropping the engine out possibly achieve?

I'd agree, doesn't look like its been looked after very well

You could buy something with less miles for £500

Bib's estimate of £300 - £400 is about right

Yeah it's oil, a thin smear

Time isn't so much of an issue, just don't want to buy something that'll cost loads to get looking half decent.

Only the cam cover, something and bugger all that leak. On brighter note that probably indicates the valves have been checked at some point.

But if the chain is that dry has anything been done?

Takes minutes to lube a chain, even if you do it on the cheap and brush on gearbox oil. Dry rusty chains put me right off.

But at £500 Id buy it, I would only spend whats necessary to make it safe and reliable though.

Well if the chain hasn't been lubed, has the engine oil been changed regularly?

Could turn into a very quick lump of scrap not worth £500

There's better ones out there for similar money.

Why would you need to remove the engine to do that? The sv is probably the easiest engine access bike I've worked on. Unless it runs like a bag of **** then a stiff brush and some effort will take of the most of that.

Probably alright for a hack if it's got service history. Wouldn't give 500 for it though and I think he'd be hard pushed to sell it if he refused an offer of 300.
