We did the usual of finding the one we liked online and getting John Lewis to price match it as they had a longer guarantee. We collected in store but I think they often do free or very cheap delivery too.

I've got a Samsung 42" something or other which we bought last year, didn't bother with a sound bar as I can run it through the speakers of our stereo but as I never watch movies at home this wasn't something I really thought about as the sound from the TV is OK anyway - I mostly watch cricket on it so hearing Ian Botham wittering on in surround sound wasn't really a priority. I have Sky+ and all that but I do use the on demand features the TV offers and Mr LPH likes the You Tube feature. Apparentoly there's some sort of fitness feature with Samsung TVs where you can run exercise classes to follow in your living room - I''ve seen the button on the screen but can't say I've ever felt the need to haul my fat ar$e off the sofa and actually press it.

As Samsung go. My led ones still going strong. Pre smart it's getting on now but its still doing the job.
It's speakers are ok (as is mums Sony).
But stick on the Bray home cinema and it's a different league.

Thanks for all the responses on the TV's. I'm liking to look of the Sony ones and they seem to get some pretty good reviews. Samsungs look good VFM too.

Anyone got any / more input on soundbars.

What features do I need? Connectivity? Ports? etc?

Looking at a Yamaha YAS 101. Anyone got any experience?

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

Didn't want cables, but I guess it's going to be so close to the TV it doesn't matter....???

See! This is why I am asking (apparently silly) questions.

Default OMO - Television advice required

Do you really need smart?

What tv service do you use? What laptop or pc set up have you got?

I only say this as I replaced my tv last year, both LG, got a 42in one. Managed to get it during a bank holiday sale, they had the same tv's (in terms of the model range) but one was smart the other not. Only £50 in it and I would have gotten a few extra inches on the smart. But, the screen was a better quality in the normal tv, higher contrast etc.

Don't know if that is still an issue as most tv's nowadays are smart but it is something to consider if, like me, you have a laptop or pc you can plug in to it via hdmi instead.

Also even as a normal tv it has USB input so I can put tv or films on a stick and plug it straight in as well.

Can't help on the sound bar front, never needed one so not looked in to it.

lets start off with ''wireless'' devices for home entertainment, unless it runs off battery's then there is no such thing as you need to plug the device into the mains anyway. so unless you have lots of power sockets in the room your going to be using you might as well just run 'passive' cabling.

soundbars are designed to give you pseudo surround sound so to make sure that the dialogue on movies and TV programs are coming from the screen so the soundbar needs to be placed under and as close to the TV screen as possible.

TV with HDMI conectivity, to get the best from your soundbar you will need to connect it via an output from your TV so make sure you buy a TV with HDMI out.

TV. i'm not going to comment on this as it's a purely personal thing but what i will say is that I have a preferance for Samsung TV's.

dont bother with 3D as its just a fad and unless you have a blu-ray player you wont be able to make full use of it.

you will find it hard to buy a TV these days that is not 'SMART' so go to your local shop/store and have a look for yourself what features come with what brand.

hope this has helped.

.
Why would you want to plug it in to your TV when you can do everything the SMART way and wireless?
All our devices work wifi or Bluetooth to the TV, be it Sony Phone or Nook Tablet etc I'd far rather sit on the sofa and work it all from there than stick a cable into the telly and stand like a nerd for a while
