How old is your Mum's licence? (The physical document that is)

On a licence issued before 1990 Category A was a car, not a motorcycle. If she hasn't had any reason to renew/exchange it then it might still be showing the old codes.

Any copper stupid enough not to spot that has no business looking in the first place.

Fairly recent, it's on her photo card. The codes are just very confusing.

Is the Code on the back Code 79(tri) in relation to the A part of the license?
If thats the case, thats to cover tricycles, (those 3 wheeled piaggios, renwacos, reliant 3 wheelers etc)
This will not cover you to ride a motorcycle. I queried this with DVLA when i saw it on a friends license and he was convinced he could ride a motorcycle legally.
Check the back, as AlexAdams has already said, i suspect you will see this there.

Depends whether it is for "Groups" or "Categories". Being ancient, mine is for "Groups", I have A,D,E as explained here
https://www.gov.uk/old-driving-licence-categories
Group A was basically all the 4 wheel stuff (and swept up all the limited versions of those such as groups B (auto), C (light trike) etc and included E but not D), D was motorbikes, E was mopeds.
