For racing they often use the smaller chain since it's lighter and they're not bothered about wear rates. Not quite the same as real world road use.
Properly adjusted and in good condition, a 520 is plenty strong enough for an SV650, but as jonboy says........... |

I wouldn't put the 520 chain on. it's true that it's ligther, and that's the reason they use it for racing. But the rest of us can't feel the differens, and i don't want to change my chain as often as the racers do. the racers also uses chains without o-rings, because they don't eat nearly as much power as the o-ring chains.
Does this mean that i should do this to, and start boiling my chain in grease??? |

There's a guy on SVRider swears that the 520 conversion took a second off his 1/4 mile times... But personally I think he's full of it. The rear benefit is the bits are much cheaper as 520's more common. You lose some tiny amount of rotating mass but you can probably save as much changing sprocket and chain manufacturers and types.

But he might read this, and all those SV Rider guys are armed to the teeth
(amusingly enough I had a death threat off an SV Rider the other day, he's going to ride over and do me in apparently- I wait with bated breath his attempts to jump the Atlantic.)

I know, and me so charming as well... Perhaps I should have stayed out of the gun control debate with the crazy militia extremists... "Ah believe that only mah 30 guns stop the gubmint from installing me with a mind control chip."
I suppose it's a surprise I only got one
