Well I've done my first observed ride. I was so-o-o nervous, but Karl, my observer, tried really hard to put me at my ease. First off he rode in front for about 10 - 15 mins to demonstrate. Then it was my go. TBH since my off I've been scared of corners, particularly left handers, and if there's oncoming - well I'd bottle out. Karl thought I wasn't too bad, which surprised me. He said my main faults were entry point - to be a tyre's width extra to the left or right before I enter the bend, else it's too late, to look through the corner rather than into it, and to roll on the throttle as soon as I can see the exit. And when I managed to get them right - oh the bike sailed through, it felt so much more stable, and I felt so much more confident.

He was very encouraging, balancing not so good points with good ones, and being even in his criticism and praise. He thought it would take a few sessions to crack the road positioning. Overall, I learned so much.

Can't wait for next week!!

glad you enjoyed it. our season doesnt start till april up here. cant wait to get out with the new bods. its so good to be able to say something to them, they try it and it makes a great difference to their riding and they appreciate your input. unfortunately you always get the numpty that has been riding for years, knows everything and doesnt like to listen to females on bikes who have only been riding a few years.

I sent my cheque off to IAM on Thursday. Saturday morning through the post came the paperwork plus the How Pass the Advance Test book.

What a brilliant book, studied it all weekend, in between TV Rugby that is. It's all common sense stuff but written down it's all plain and easy to understand.

Some of the advice came as a bit of a shock, as it has highlighted some really bad habits I've developed, my worst has to be coasting tight junctions. I've nearly two months to loose them before the first observed ride on the 27th April.

I'm looking forward to it, they are bound to pick up other bad habits that I don’t know about though.

I couldn't do the second ride as it was snowing.

But I'm reading Motorcycle Roadcraft and as Mogs says it's all common sense really but in set out in such a clear way. Even stuff not related to the bike is interesting. Like, how many peeps know what order cat's eyes are placed in - without looking it up? Or when you see a signpost with 4 different signs on, why are they placed in the order they are?

I apssed my IAM test today, had a really good ride even though the temperature stayed at freezing the whole time.

My experiences can be found in my IAM diary

Well done, Patch!!!!

Diary is very interesting - haven't read all of it, will finish tomorrow, it's a great read. Funny your tales of the NSL, my problem is getting up to it in the first place But it irritates me in the car when someone won't drive up to the NSL so it's a fair point.
