i lived down in docklands when first moved to london and it was very dull... there were very few pubs, bars etc... just thousands of sh!te 80's housing..

if your GF is working in victoria you'd probably be better off looking at south london as the trains run into victoria quite easily..

balham, clapham, stretham..

are you planning on riding to work?? all of the above are probably about 1/2 hr ride, (never done that ride in rush hour so not entirely sure).

other than that i lived in wilesden green for a while.. and that was really quite nice and easy to get into town from.

Balham/Streatham will be slow trains... Clapham will be around 10 mins to Victoria or Waterloo. Ironically, Croydon trains will get you in quicker than a Balham train even though Croydon is further out. Usually cos they dont stop. Its usually east croydon direct to london bridge - the occasional one stops at new cross. The victoria ones stop at clapham junction. But still as Kate said about 20 mins...

If travelling in rush hour become accustomed to the sardine phenomena as people try to impersonate the japanese bullet trains and squeeze onto an already overcrowded carriage. Youve more chance of getting a seat the further out you live...

If biking, Im sure Streatham and Clapham or Brixton havent improved since I ventured down there. I used to work in docklands and my best route was round the south circular and up the a2 to blackwall tunnel. Longer but quicker route.

I found in rush hour, especially going through norwood, dulwich, camberwell you may as well call it 45mins - hour depending on where youre going and traffic. 30 mins in rush hour traffic is optomistic in the least unless traffics really dropped that much due to the c charge compared to when I was biking in.

Thanks for everyones input.

Travelling to work by train I supose is more important than it being an easy commute by bike. I aren't intending to travel by bike all year.

Eltham doesn;t look to bad so I might have a look round there. Probably going down next weekend for a look around. Not looking forward to London traffic although I'm sure it won't be much worse than Dublin where I lived last year.

Looking forward to meeting some of you on friday nights though no doubt you won't be able to understand my accent.

Are you all mad?

You don't even know the bloke and you're suggesting he goes to live in South London, AKA the wrong side of the tracks.

What's he ever done to you?

Are you mad

I live in Sutton (South London, between Croydon & Kingston), and it takes me usually around 40 mins on average to get in on the bike - it's 15 miles door to door
By public transport, it's around 1:45 to 2 hours each way, with no chance of a seat. It's like the black hole of Calcutta in summer - but worse
And if you need to start early, or finish late, you're in more trouble - the frequency of public transport drops off dramatically
Use the bike - you know it makes sense

ps don't go on the norf side of the rivva, very dodgy geezers up there, best stay saaf

Mmm, have you thought about Camden, Islington or King's cross? Victoria line to Victoria for the missus, and northern line for you. It would also be great scootering to work for either of you. Get a scooter that is in good nick but looks tatty - you'll be laughing - it's easily the best way to get around.

DO NOT live in the docklands or that area - dull as ditch water - nothing happening when people go home from work.

Otherwise, Any trains that go through East croydon are a good idea, as there are very frequent services to both Victoria and London bridge.

My advice is either live smack in the middle (think zone 1, 2) or zone 6 and beyond. Anything else seems like a crap compromise to me. If you have money and want a flat then you have a lot of options, if you want a garden garage etc, then the same money for a swish two bed flat gets you a lovely 3 bed house where I live, and work is 40min door to door.
