Agreed.

You're right about the forks. My brakes are stock except for braided lines, and with a good tug they can squeeze your eyballs against your visor. With stock forks though it's not a very inspiring experience, but with a simple upgrade or two you can get away with a lot more.

I found after fitting a fork brace that my bike doesn't stand up as much when I brake lightly into a bend. For example when you going round a sharp left hander and suddenly there's a Fokus about to cross your path.

The stock SV calipers work fine when well setup and maintained. All those that race them can only change the lines, discs, fluid and pads.

Braided lines add more feel and bite, fresh fluid can work wonders and so can a new seal kit and bit of a clean on your old calipers.

Pads can make a huge difference too.

I have to admit mine have a bit too much travel at the front (1999 bike). Just rebuilt the calipers, not doen anything to the master cylinder, all bled okay, but still the pistons seem to be sitting back a bit in the calipers. Tried rebleeding, also the tieing the brake lever back trick, nothing so far. Will have another go at bleeding soon but I can almost guarantee there is no air in them. Hmm....

I can lock the front on mine (I mated with a hedge yesterday after it locked on grit-****) but the extra weight makes a huge difference to stopping on a good road.

I agree with Northy and have the SRAD bearings on order

Yesterday, while fooling about on a Daytona 650 and a City X, I discovered that what I was taking for good brakes on the front of mine are, in fact, as soft as s****... So if you're looking at it I'd definately budget for a better master cylinder. The SV one will work. Just... But why spend 100s on a front end swap for something that will work, just?

Still perfectly safe and an upgrade on stock, mind.

compared to any other bike i've ridden the SV's brakes are a bit vague, even when fully bled.
What master cylinders could i swap onto it to improve the feel from the brake lever.

Pretty much anything'll work as long as it fits on the bars, I reckon. A lot of US riders seem to use SP-2 m/cs, I've been looking for one of those or a recent CBR one for a while but nothing doing. You don't want anything too powerful, if you ask me, no Brembo 19x20 radials or similiar
