apart from the chain.......the best thing you can do is to make sure you adjust the gear lever DOWN. solved my problem completely. You have a limited range of ankle movement up and sometimes it can feel like you've 'gone all the way' but inreality just gone as far as you can! Takes 2 minutes. Adjust the end of your lever down 10mm and try it out.

What I find strange about the SV is sometimes I can knock it up and not feel as if the gear lever has moved at all, and other times I feel like it's gone all the way but I'm stuck in a false neutral (or the same gear on one occasion

as already posted
1. proper chain tension 2. oil at correct level 3. clean shift linkage 4, good positive shifts.... sometimes adjusting lever for your ergonomics helps, also consider flipping linkage to Gp shift 1 up 5 down |

I've done nearly 60000 miles on my 2000 model now without ever finding a false neutral. It's a lovely gearbox that feels like day one.
I would guess that you haven't been lubing the gearlever and the stiffness is not allowing you to engage the gears fully. |

I get them infrequently enough that it totalyl freaks me out when I do get one
