I have had my same XP install from before SP1 was released. I installed the system in 2002, so its possable to have an XP install going for years and trust me when i say that my usage on a computer is not basic at all.
I leave it at 2 hardware firewalls on my routers and XPSP2 firewall. Nothings getting through without my sayso!
Avast! freebie AV as my Symantec subscription ran out and i'm cheap.

As for IE on many an occasion i've had to reinstall windows in the past because of this. Not with XP as yet. 3rd party stuff is likely to be the cause. If you're really unlucky you may not be able to fix it either.

The Symantec Antivirus Corporate does not need a subscription plus it does not have the bloatware that the Home editions do.

I did not like the look of Avast!, i prefered AVG, but SAV is what i like.

I think IE is fine. I like Opera 8 too, but IE suits me just fine. Can't understand why there's so much hysteria surrounding it...

Yup. Get firefox, try it. Aswell being a much better Web browser, its also a lot nicer to use than IE IMO.

Here is a linky http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

MS still insist that you use IE for some of their updates. So, leave it on your machine. And, then use it only if you are forced to. You will find a lot of problems go away.

Want to get ride of all of you windows problems?

Try Ubuntu, its easy to install and there is a huge base of people happy to help you out. Most of the basic functions that your day to day user needs works straight away, e-mail, browsing, word processing... And you can run 'dual' boot and still use windows if you get scared. Try it, its not as hard as you might think...
