trouble is with that everybody who has an orginal 916, 996 or 998 is going to say hah mines better because its an orginal.

999 & 749 owners are going to say "I like mine because its different"

Personally I think they should redesign the 999 again and this time do it properly. Dont cope out and go back towards the 916 design. Dont get me wrong it is a design classic and a beautiful looking bike. But they'e done that once already.

Tiime for something different I think.

I think a restyled front and rear end would be enough. I dont like the exhausts on the 749 & 999 I prefer the underseat cans as on the 916. I never liked the stacked headlights. But it does make the bike look different and you instantly know what it is when you see one.

I think that Ducati have to make it a twin though. They've always made twins and to make V4 roadbike will alienate IMHO alot of their faithful customers. However what about the new customers who want something different a V4 coudl be just the thing. Look at the RC30 & RC45.

However a V4 roadbike would be awesome and would mean and end to all this nonesense about regulations in WSB. Aprillia are making a V4 with an eye on WSB in a few years time.

As a useable real-world road bike, I think the 748 was the best of the lot.

Fizz...You made some good points however:

Cucciolo Ducati's first bike had one of these donks which as you can see was a single.

The V twin dynasty began in 1971 with a 500cc race engine. The rest as they say is history.

(Yes I am a sad pedant!)

I think where the arguments come in over styling is that yes the Tamburini designed bike was so way out there that in truth to ask the same factory to repeat the impact with a later model was close to impossible. So much so that in reality the change to the 9 series was no more than minor aesthetic alteration but lots of technical improvements.

Better than trying to repeat the style impact I think Ducati went the right way and largely addressed the reliability issues with the new bike which are more important.

Funny how now as we are all so used to the look of the 916 and co. That all of those big criticisms that people had of the bikes,(and there were plenty!) seem to melt away.

I also love the look of the 916 to 998 but would not give up my 749 for a 748 for example. Why step backwards? The latest model is by far the better bike although I accept that it does not for many people have the same eye candy appeal.

But talking of sexy bikes the new F800R is really something:

It surprised me how good this looked until i saw the pigs ear they've made of the dash/light area, whats wrong with a nice simple dash and plain round headlight ? Just like my naked K5

Diveboy...Not likely to get upset at that at all mate. eacxh has their own preferences. I would love a 916/998 as a second bike no problem.

Ducatis a nice bike if your into Retro...

I'm just disappointed in Ducati spitting the dummy out about WSB (according to MCN) Sad thing is I bet they get what they want and get their 1200’s racing and ruin a Great Racing Series…
