Call me traditional but a map is fine, and a quick glance at the sun to get orientated does it for me.I wonder how we built an empire without this stuff. How the hell did we find Australia?

That's all fair enough but in order to do all that safely you have to stop your bike, turn pages etc etc.

I think the safety benefits of having spoken instructions in your ear vs the temptation to looking at a map on the move far outweigh the "Traditional".

Cook had a copy of a copy of a Chinese mappae mundi which showed the position of Australia to within a few hundred miles... Like Columbus in fact, and Magellan, and De Gama, they all knew where they were going and what they'd find. Not quite as good as GPS since they had no way of measuring longtitude, mind.

The guy who found Brasil was Pedro Alvarez Cabral, probably the other guys stole his maps, so he got lost

Now the Chinese, they were proper explorers. "The Japanese say there might be a country over there, somewhere." "Brilliant, lets send a hundred ships full of goods, horses, livestock and men and have a look" Years pass. The ships arrive back. "We've discovered practically the entire world!" "Shut up, you'll anger the gods- best thing to do is pretend it never happened" "Oh, OK then"

That'll be a collector's item one day. Like my minidisc players, both bought within 10 minutes of the Age of MP3.
