It is if you join HMRC. If you go into the uniformed side you can annoy the hell out of people by stopping them after a 22 hour flight and detain them indefinitely while you check for illegal importations.

Or you can be a VAT inspector [as I was] and bill people who have been cheating for years. And if you go into fraud work, you can kick their doors in at 6am and seized all their records and computers. And listen to numerous conversations confirming what you already know - Customs DO have more powers than the police.

Or you can stop lorries under this new regime they were bringing in. Stop vans and check for diesel.

Or you can go after the labour gang masters which is in our remit.

Plenty of scope for excitement in Customs :P
Also Sarah Conner works for you lot, after fighting off terminators etc she signs cheques for HMRC.

Does sound a lot more interesting the Insolvency Service (well the bit I'm in) unless of course you have a love of paper and moving it around.

Not really going to help you. But try and find a job you like the sound of. Something that you think you want to do as a career. Find out more about it do some research find out what the pay is like and can you afford to live , do the things you wanna do in your spare time and then pick that job.

I work in I.T. I really enjoy it. But you might not. The hours can be long and I have to do 24/7 on call one week in every four. Being phoned up by work at 3 in the morning isnt the most enjoyable experience. Often I have to work out of hours at weekends and evenings so I can do maintenance etc etc so it can disrupt my social life sometimes. Working on a IT Helpdesk is the most thankless task you can ever do IMHO. I really wouldnt recommend that.

However, the pay is good for what I do now. Its always challenging and I never get bored. Often I'm faced with situations where something is broken and I don't know how to fix it so I have the challenge of working out whats wrong and putting it right. Which for me I really like. Plus the fact I've worked up through the food chain as it were and now I dont have to work on the helpdesk I get to design & deploy new software and hardware. The biggest thing I've done was to roll out Windows 2000 remotley across two buildings ( approximately 700 PC's ), I also got to setup the software infrastructure that ran one of warehouses that dealt with approx 5000+ parcels a day.

I'm currently managing 3 data centres and am responsible for ensuring that every runs smoothyl and helping to plan an installation of 2.5 million pounds worth on Sun Solaris hardware. Also I am managing moving 50 odd PC''s and associated gubbins 10 miles from one warehouse to another in Swindon.

I get ADSL at home that work pay for and also a laptop that I can use when I'm at home for personal use. This is so I can dial in when I'm on call.

You know theres a website with OGD vacancies on dont you? If you dont and are interested Ill find the link.

Ps. Insolvency service is quite fun too. If youre an Insolvency Practitioner you can upset people just as much as we can when you work with us. As one of my visits has transpired. Someone is under the impression we cant touch them - limited liability etc. And that they can move the money offshore.

Its help from the IP means that a. they are now personally liable for the debt and b. we can go after their offshore accounts in the Channel Islands and Carribean.

See my post above, Basically they are well paid and not boring. However if you have no skills or experience then you are likely to earn f*ck all money for the first two years until you have got trained and some experience under your belt.
