I was told that they also sort of helped your head snapping back quite for far in an off, since the back of the lid sort of rests on it when you are tucked.

This might be absolute rubbish though.
I put one on once, and the concept seemed... plausable say.

When Hizzy had his big off at Brands a few years back there were some photos of him going into the gravel head first. The hump definitely appeared to stop his head being snapped back any further. So although he broke his necy, it might have stopped it being any worse.

However, I'm with everyone sels in that they look silly, unless you're tucked right down behind the bubble slipstreaming <insert> down the straight at Jerez.

During part of their magazine programme leading up to the race yesterday, Spanish TV were in KR's pits and one of his mechanics fitted quite a large looking contraption on top of the hump right behind his head. I have no idea what that was or what it contained?

I think it's some sort of fan that blows cold air into the riders leathers via a vent in the hump.

I've seen some of the Superbike boys using them.

the "hump" as you've called it was developed to streamline the air behind the riders helmet, making it teardrop shaped and getting rid of turbulence, it's not a safety aid of any type, most (if not all) if you examine them are cutout at the neck so as not to impede movement, so provide no supporting function, I've seen a few cases out on the road where the hump has allowed the riders head to snap back onto the road as it keeps the shoulders from laying flat when you have an off.

Whilst it's true this helps with speed, and gives space that can be utilised, as it's greater than the natural space along the spine for the road I'd not have one, and don't think I'm fast enough on a track to need one.

Cheers Mark.

I'll never forget the humped suit, race glove, race booted rider on a Honda C90 on the way to work once. I was laughing so much i missed the change of lights. When i aksed the "Why" question, he said that his bike was in for a service and they gave it to him as a loan bike....I still laughed even if it wasnt true.

This is pretty much the conclusion I hace come to as well! Seems though that more and more suits come with them these days, it's harder to find one without!

Bottom line is that since i'm buying off the peg, I'm going for fit and comfort. If it has a hump the so be it, but i'm not going to compromise on comfort for fear of looking like a nob!

i should imagine its difficult to look over your shoulder when pulling out with a hump in your leathers and impossible to carry a haversack should you wish to do so
