Had a rant about this stuff myself in the cinema the other day. When I was a kid we learnt the green X code. Don't mess around in or near the roads or you might get killed was the message. Now the onus is completely on the drivers and other road users. Forget educating the kids now - they are beyond us, turn instead on drivers/riders got to be their fault, bet their going to fast anyway. There seems to be no personal responsability anymore, everything is somebody elses fault. Of course we need to look out, moderate speed where and when neccesary but these messages are just garbled at best and nonsence at worst.

Anyone seen the stats on one ad that says at 30mph the kid will have an 80% chance of living but at 40mph same kid will have an 80% chance of dying? I'm no mathamatician but these seem like fudged stats to me. Anyone know more?

I see this on the TV the other day, and it annoyed me immensely.

It’s basically putting the onus onto bikers to look out for daft tits who open doors, instead of looking before they open, in the view of drivers. Since I have had one or two doors open on me, and had to swerve/avoid/give them the finger, etc It really angered me.

You're bang on the nail, totally agree winds me up

Yeah why dont they say 20% chance of living!

And it almost seems as though they're condoning hitting the kid as long as you're only doing 30mph, i say dont hit the kid in the first place.

More to the point why dont they just tell us a safe speed to hit the dam kid, (100% survival rate) say 12mph then we'll know how much to brake.

Two schools of thought on this i reckon:

1) Daft t*its opens doors on biker, - all responsibility absolved from bike rider.

2) Some daft t*its left a car door open, bike rider should look were the blooming h*ll he/she is going!

No matter how well you train and impress upon drivers of the danger of opening doors without checking behind, it's not just the driver who can throw a car door open without a care. Who hasn't seen a child launch himself out of a car without giving a toss? Geriatrics? Drunken passengers?

Keep out of range of car doors!

Have to second that, my main thought on watching that is why was the biker so close to parked cars on an empty road? He'd also be able to see round the corner he's coming up to if he moved out a few feet...

A great deal of emphasis was put on this when I did my DAS. It certainly stuck in my mind - we were taught to keep as far away as safely possible from parked cars in case they do this, and if that is not possible then slow right down and assume that someone will do this anyway!

But what an annoying advert - its all one way - it should be equally aimed at car drivers and passengers too

The onus isnt just on the driver, the government wants to make drivers legally culpable. As in, whatever the circumstances, if you hit a kid it's your fault and you're getting prosecuted.

In a spectacular display of legislative stupidity, not only is the green cross code not taught anymore, if the government goes though with this we'll end up with more dead kids and aload of drivers in prison.
